The IRC Yemen began its programs in October 2012. Currently IRC Yemen is operating in eight governorates in the south and north of Yemen through direct programming and through a local partnership in Health, WASH, Nutrition, Economic Recovery Development, Education, Child Protection, Gender and Women Protection and Empowerment. These sectors are responding to food insecurity, cholera and other humanitarian needs within the displaced and conflict affected populations

Job Overview/Summary: The Child Protection Officer (SAFE) will work in the Child Protection team based in Aden and deliver the IRC’s Supporting Adolescents and their Families in Emergencies (SAFE) approach. The CPO (SAFE) will facilitate skills building sessions with adolescent boys. In addition, they will closely monitor and document the approach as a key priority for this role. The CPO (SAFE) will work closely with the SAFE Facilitators in delivering this activity.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Implement SAFE and provide oversight to Facilitators on the approach
  • Work as part of the SAFE team to generate learning on implementing the SAFE approach
  • Participate in an initial SAFE approach training and engage in ongoing skills building using SAFE learning materials provided by the CP Manager and CP Coordinator
  • With support from the CP Manager, mentor and coach the Facilitators responsible for co-facilitating sessions with adolescent boys
  • Manage SAFE Facilitators and SAFE programme location
  • Lead community engagement activities to introduce SAFE activities to community leaders and caregivers
  • Conduct initial assessments to identify the risks and needs of adolescent boys in the programme location
  • Work closely with other project staff to identify adolescent boys, and female and male caregivers to participate in SAFE learning activities
  • Act as lead facilitator to deliver sessions during the week for adolescent boys together with SAFE Facilitators
  • Facilitate sessions once a week for female or male caregivers
  • Provide psychological first aid and support to adolescent girls or boys who disclose experiences of violence and refer them to relevant services (i.e. case management team)
  • Facilitate feedback meetings with adolescent boys, female and male community stakeholders and caregivers and share feedback with the CP Manager
  • Complete weekly reports on project activities, including documenting feedback from participants of SAFE sessions and proactively sharing lessons learned with the team and CP Manager
  • Participate in debriefing sessions with the CP Manager and team and share reflections, lessons learned and recommendations to strengthen SAFE program approach


  • Consistently and proactively monitor/assess the safety of field teams; promptly reporting concerns or incidents to IRC management and liaising with community leaders and other external parties as required to maintain/enhance the security environment for IRC programs
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor to enable and develop IRC programs

Professional Standards

Job Requirements:

  • Technical diploma or degree in social work, education, human rights, or related degree desired
  • At least two years’ experience working to support children, adolescent girl and boys, women  or parent  and caregivers
  • A high level of motivation to assist adolescents affected by humanitarian crisis
  • A learning attitude and willingness to increase skills and knowledge in the protection of adolescents
  • Capacity building, facilitation or training experience
  • The ability to adapt and work under pressure and strong interpersonal skills
  • Basic competency in computer skills
  • Previous experience supervising and coordinating a team preferred
  • Demonstrated understanding of working with children and particularly vulnerable children
  • Previous experience in capacity building and mentoring of staff preferred
  • Personal qualities: Team player, flexible, network-builder, able to handle pressure well.
  • Fluency in Arabic
  • Written and spoken English is an advantage
