The Job

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is a non-governmental, humanitarian organization with 60 years of experience in helping to create a safer and more dignified life for refugees and internally displaced people. NRC advocates for the rights of displaced populations and offers assistance within the shelter, education, emergency food security, legal assistance, and water,sanitation and hygiene sectors. 
The Norwegian Refugee Council has approximately 5000 committed and competent employees involved in projects across four continents. In addition, NRC runs one of the world’s largest standby rosters -NORCAP, with 650 professionals, ready to be deployed on 72 hours notice when a crisis occurs 
The Field Monitor will work as a part of the protection team dedicated to the field-based projects that seek to prevent, monitor and respond to issues that affect the safety, dignity and participation of displacement-affected women, men, girls and boys in Yemen. The Field Monitor will be responsible for working directly with displacement affected communities to safely and respectfully document protection concerns, build relationships within the community, documenting referrals and raising awareness about available services and referral pathways. Working closely with the Protection Assistants, Social Workers, Officer and all NRC field teams, the Field Monitor will help ensure that NRC has good evidence of protection issues and is able to respond and improve overall response to these appropriately.

Job description

  • Ensure adherence with NRC policies, tools, handbooks and guidelines.
  • Implement delegated duties according to plan of action.
  • Record and file information correctly.
  • Work with diverse groups of people, and explore and asses new and better ways to assist.
  • Promote and share ideas that will help NRC respond appropriately.
  • Facilitate interviews, household visits and group discussions on protection and related issues in a manner that is respectful and adheres to protection principles.
  • Work with community groups and NRC protection staff to contribute to monitoring activities that build a better understanding of protection needs.
  • Make referrals and community service mappings to ensure people with humanitarian needs can access information and services.
  • Contribute programming ideas to help NRC design protection projects that are realistic and contextually-appropriate, particularly from community suggestions and input.
  • Undertake field monitoring and community engagement with relevant community members and leaders, to explain NRC’s activities and their purpose.
  • Participate in the delivery of community trainings and other activities that build knowledge and help engage the community in protection.
  • Support efforts to mainstream gender sensitivity into NRC Yemen’s ways of working both internally and in terms of our programming.
  • Any other tasks as identified by management.

Qualifications

  • Experience working in protection in a humanitarian/recovery context.
  • Self-motivated, passionate and ready to inspire others on NRCs mandate and our work in protection and humanitarian response.
  • Experience in Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Experience working in complex and volatile contexts.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • A university degree in social work, social science, political science or related subject.
  • An understanding of humanitarian principles and basic protection principles.
  • Relational skills with community engagement and mobilization.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and high levels of self-awareness.
  • An open and respectful approach to working with communities, including people who are marginalised.
  • An understanding of women’s protection and inclusion of populations with specific needs.
  • Good writing skills in Arabic and English to record information and support the preparation of relevant reports and case studies.
  • Basic computer skills, especially in Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook.
  • Fluency in Arabic. Knowledge of spoken English an advantage but not required.
