General Information on the Mission


Première Urgence - Aide Médicale Internationale (PU-AMI) is a non-governmental, non-profit, non-political and non-religious international aid organization. Our teams are committed to supporting civilian victims of marginalization and exclusion, or those hit by natural disasters, wars and economic collapses by answering their fundamental needs. Our aim is to provide emergency relief to uprooted people in order to help them recover their dignity and regain self-sufficiency. The association leads in average 190 projects a year in the following sectors of intervention: Food Security, Health, Nutrition, Construction and Rehabilitation of infrastructures, Water, Sanitation, Hygiene and Economic Recovery. PU-AMI is providing assistance to around 5 million people in 20 countries across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and France.

PU-AMI’s strategy/position in the country

PU-AMI has been present in Yemen since 2007. From 2007 to 2011, PU-AMI supported the primary health system in Hodeidah Governorate. After a one-year stand-by in 2011 due to security reasons, the mission re-started in July 2012 with a nutrition project focusing both on emergency response and a longer term community-based approach in Hodeidah and extended its activity in Raymah Governorate.

Since 2017, PU-AMI continues to concentrate its intervention in 6 districts of Hodeida and 3 districts of Raymah, where a high number of IDPs are stressing the capacity of the health system to cope in an already extreme precarious situation. The core field of intervention for PU-AMI in these Governorates is an integrated approach on nutrition including community-based activities (OTP/SFP and community mobilization as a strong component of the program, within health facilities and outreach activities.

In Hodeidah and Raymah governorates, PU-AMI works to contribute to reduce the impact and severity of nutritional challenges and to improve health status of most vulnerable populations, through supplementary nutrition integrated response based upon health, hygiene and nutrition education and capacity building. In Rayma, PU-AMI is supporting a stabilisation centre for severely malnourished children with medical complications

In Mokha PU-AMI works to contribute to the improvement of the health and nutrition status of most vulnerable populations in the area, through an integrated approach including rehabilitation of health facilities, trainings, capacity building, as well hygiene and health promotion activities.

Job Description

Overall Objective

The Health Facility Midwife assists PU-AMI’s and GHO’s Staff in implementing emergency interventions. She assists in providing full scope reproductive health care services, including but not limited to nursing care, treatment, TSFP nutrition, preventive care, coordination of care, follow-up, and health maintenance to all patients according to national protocols.

Under supervision of the Health Facility Health Officer, she will carry on day to day reproductive health care activities with additional support in primary healthcare consultations, nutritional care for PLWs, health and hygiene promotion and referrals of infant and PLWs for vaccination according to protocols.

In addition, the Midwife is a member of PU-AMI H&N team: in that capacity she is familiar with the philosophy, polices, goals and objectives of PU-AMI and GHO/DHO and works collaboratively to achieve them. She complies with all Health Facility policies and procedures, as well as patient right state and MoPHP regulations.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  1. Support reproductive health care services in HF with/without support of GHO midwife ​
  2. Responsible for screening, follow up and admission of Malnourished PLWs with/without support of GHO midwife
  3. Supporting and capacitating GHO Midwife and Other PU-AMI health staff at HF.

Specific objectives and linked activities

  1. Responsible for reproductive health care services in HF with/without support of GHO midwife
  2. Responsible for the maternal health care services
    • Strong skills in conducting Normal Vaginal Deliveries and essential newborn care.
    • Treat postpartum hemorrhage (including manual removal of placenta and injection oxytocin). Stabilize and refer required cases.
    • Conduct active management of the third stage of labor for reduction of post-partum hemorrhage.
    • Provide immediate postpartum care, including history, examination and counselling
    • Provide postpartum assessment(s) of mother and infant
    • Counsel on breastfeeding and provide nutritional support to woman
    • Provide immediate newborn care with a focus on airway, warmth and breastfeeding.
    • Provide emergency measures for newborn resuscitation
    • Provide routine newborn care, including physical examination, care of the umbilical cord, immunization, etc.
    • Provide emergency care for newborns (including hypothermia, infections of eye or cord stump, etc.) and infants, according to principles of IMCI
    • Able to do ANC/PNC according to the National reproductive health (SRH) protocols.
    • Advise on development of birth plan, and promote the concept of birth preparedness and complication readiness
    • Screening of risk factors of pregnancy, ensuring delivery in hospitals and identification and timely Referral of high-risk pregnancies.
    • Ensure that the delivery room is kept clean, tidy.
    • Ensure that the instruments used are cleaned and sterilized and store according to the standards.
    • Ensured that privacy is maintained deliveries
    • Ensure that correct and timely record of all ANC, PNC, deliveries, referrals etc. is maintained.
    • Ensure the PU-AMI and National Health Care Waste Management Protocols have been implemented properly.
    • Offering support and advice following events such as miscarriage, termination, stillbirth, neonatal abnormality and neonatal death
    • Ensure that privacy and confidentiality is maintained during counseling.
    • Education of mothers about parental self-care, FP, breastfeeding, Nutritional status and danger signs in pregnancy and childbirth.
    • Ensure accurate record keeping of all Sexual reproductive health (SRH) services
    • Refer neonate, infant and PLWs for vaccinations according to the recommended protocol and schedule.
    • Ensure that patient/attendants receive necessary health education.
    • Close working relationship with the PU-Ami and GHO reproductive health staff and build their capacity building through trainings and on job coaching.
    • Providing feedback to Health facility Medical Doctor/Project activity manager in issues related to the medicine/equipment, ANC, PNC and safe and clean delivery.
  3. Responsible for screening, follow up and admission of Malnourished PLWs with/without support of GHO midwife

Responsible for the Nutrition activities

  1. Supervision
    • Respect of the criteria for admission and exit for MAM PLWs
    • Correct filling of the individual cards and beneficiary register
    • Quality of medical care provided: nutritional supplies and drugs distribution, correct application of the medical protocols; clinical follow-up, re-hydration, early detection of the medical complications
    • Ensure food distribution is in the correct quantities
    • Nutritional follow-up: Passive screening on admission and each follow-up in TSFP.
    • Respect of the dignity of the patients and their accompanying
    • Resolution of problems occurring between the patients and the staff
    • To ensure that mothers are well informed about the functioning of the center and schedule of follow up.
    • Check the cleaning of the center.
  2. Specific Nutrition responsibilities
    • To accurately take the MUAC of the pregnant and lactating women
    • To accurately take the weight and height of the PLWs
    • To properly record the measurements on the individual card of the patient
    • To inform the patients on the weight of the patient (increase, status quo, or loss)
    • Patients and their relatives are given necessary health education.
  1. Supporting and capacitating GHO Midwife and Other PU-AMI health staff at HF.
  • Providing technical support to health facility (HF) midwifery / maternity staffs.
  • On job coaching to the HF midwifery/ maternity staffs to perform daily activities.
  • Collection and computerization of daily/weekly/monthly maternity data.
  • Reporting and attendance to different meetings, including with relevant stakeholders.
  • Supervise the management of MDM medical/non-medical stock donated to the HF/maternity ensuring no stock outs of essential drugs and medical materials to continue sexual reproductive health services.
  • Support and help GHO/PU-AMI health staff to complete daily/weekly/monthly reports.
  • Support community health workers in their provision of community based health care by participating in, and providing technical guidance as required, during periodic CHW meetings
  • Provide supportive clinical supervision and technical information to CHWs regarding maternal and newborn health
  • In general, the HF Midwife has to be flexible in performing his/her duties to ensure that beneficiaries are getting good quality services and perform other additional duties on request of the Health Facilities Doctor.

Professional experience

  1. Minimum 1 year experience in SRH and hospitals in relevant position

  2. Midwife, with technical competence in dealing with patients
