Job Description

Save the Children in Yemen is looking for eligible candidates for the positions of: 
 
Education Project Assistant 

CHILD SAFEGUARDING: 
Level 3:  the role holder will have contact with children and/or young people either frequently (e.g. once a week or more) or intensively (e.g. four days in one month or more or overnight) because they work in country programs; or are visiting country programs; or because they are responsible for implementing the SC’s policy. Therefore, s/he is of checking/vetting process staff.

ROLE PURPOSE: 

Save the Children International (SCI) Yemen Country Programme has an annual budget of around USD 70 million and growing, working mainly on the humanitarian response to the ongoing conflict and its impact including more recently on the cholera outbreak. The SCI Yemen has over 700 staff and 1500 volunteers and works in nine governorates in the north and south of the country through seven field offices and two sub-offices in addition to the main office in Sana’a.

The goal of the $9m, 21-month project is to provide quality learning opportunities for out of school children living in IDP sites. The program will be primarily based on SCI signature’s Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) and Basic Literacy and Numeracy (BLN) curricula, but it will also include the pilot of UNICEF newly developed Self-Learning Program (SLP). The project supports a total of X children in 4 governorates (Hodeidah, Hajjah, Taiz and Ibb) and activities will be implemented by SCI and its partners (SOUL in Taiz, SDF in Hajjah and LMMPO in Hodeidah).

Under the direct supervision of the Project Coordinator, the Education Project Officer will be responsible for the monitoring, supervision the day to day implementation of SC project activities (direct implementation and partners monitoring) in the governorate.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

Programme Support:

  • Implement and assist in the planning and implementation of education activities in EiE program areas in close coordination with the relevant people in the community as outlined in the detailed implementation plan, especially for the remedial activities and learning and material distributions.
  • Contribute to technical support provided to staff of Ministry of Education, Governorate Education Office, District Education Office, Temporary Learning Spaces, Student Councils and Father Mother Councils (FMC) for the improvement of utilization of education services in target areas
  • Assist in trainings delivered to community members, teachers, stakeholders, and monitor and report the implementation of educational activities 
  • Collect and assist in analysis of project related data and keep up-to-date the filing system for the project documenting that the education activities have achieved their objectives. This includes children’s attendance, teachers’ attendance and any other data requested by MEAL and project/PDQ team.
  • Support all relevant MEAL activities related to planning and implementing baseline, midline and endline assessments and reporting on the same.
  • Support the implementation of campaigns such as Safe Back to School campaigns and Safe Back to School Protocol.
  • In collaboration with the Education Project Officer, conduct child safeguarding, gender equality and inclusion training, and session on SCI code of conduct for teachers, members of FMC and volunteers. 
  • Prepare reports with support from the Education Project Officer showing statistical and narrative information on the progress of the project in the target communities. 
  • Work in close collaboration with other SCI staff (WASH, Health, etc.) in the target areas – develop joint work plans.
  • Support SC trained teachers, FMC, volunteers and children in the implementation of project activities and ensure their feedback are listened to and incorporated in the management of the project activities as possible.
  • Provide technical assistance to other programs when requested by the supervisor.
  • Support administrative tasks such as preparing Purchase Requests and needed follow-up actions.
  • Supervise distribution at field level and be responsible for all the relevant documentation, including photos.
  • Work with MEAL team and the Project’s data management staff when required in data collection, entry, processing and analysis.
  • Do field visits at least three times per week, reporting their implementation and results according the templates available and provide a weekly report to the Education Project Officer.
  • Collaborate with child safeguarding staff in checklisting and reporting safeguarding issues identified.
  • Coordinate with Child Protection staff in field visits and their reportings.   
  • Collect successful stories as needed.
  • Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Essential:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Education or in any other closely related field.  
  • Experience working as a teacher or development professional in education or closely related field
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven experience of working with children in a responsible and caring manner.
  • Experience in monitoring and reporting of community development programs.
  • Experience in working with NGOs.
  • Strong understanding of community development processes.
  • A working knowledge of computers including use of MS Office Suite.

Desirable:

  • Very good written and oral communication skills in English.
