Job Description

TITLE: Communication and Media Coordinator
TEAM/PROGRAMME: ACMC    
LOCATION: Aden

CHILD SAFEGUARDING: 

Level 3 - the responsibilities of the post may require the post holder to have regular contact with or access to children or young people. As part of these responsibilities the post holder will support the establishment of child safeguarding systems, promote a culture of keeping children safe, and ensure that potential harm to children (by our own staff and/ or as a result of how we do our work) is identified and addressed on an ongoing basis. The post holder should report and respond to interventions as determined by position related responsibilities identified in the Child Safeguarding policy.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

The post-holder will work with staff throughout Save the Children and a wide range of external actors, including local communities and partners, to ensure Save the Children’s humanitarian response in Yemen is effectively presented both nationally and regionally to the general public. This will be done through the development of media products and the building of robust relationships with media representatives. The post holder will also be expected to act as spokesperson (in Arabic) for the Country Office as well as take on a significant role in the delivery of campaigns activities. 

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

Communications

  • Work with programme teams to gather relevant information and provide inputs to PRs, factsheets, social media channels, and newsletters. 
  • Ensure adherence to and understanding of the information and visibility policy for national staff.
  • Work with programme teams to proactively identify and gather powerful case studies – including management of multimedia where needed– that can be used for donor reporting, media, fundraising and advocacy, in adherence with NGO’s child safeguarding and consent procedures.
  • Ensure that all communications products from the south are of a high quality and conform to NGO’s standards and procedures, including brand guidelines and child safeguarding.
  • Provide regular data and information on context developments and programme updates to inform advocacy, media and communications outputs.
  • Facilitate and host visits from multimedia producers, including identifying project sites and case studies and translating in the field. 
  • The post-holder will ensure effective systems are in place to monitor the ACCM team’s awards for the south offices are signed-off on time and are shared with the Award focal point.  

Advocacy and coordination

  • Support the CM Manager in engagement in coordinated advocacy with external partners as needed.
  • Support Yemen-wide advocacy initiatives and strategic engagement in key advocacy messages/moments, research, data collection and campaigning
  • Provide context and humanitarian updates to CM Manager.

General

  • Comply with NGO policies and practice with respect to child protection, code of conduct, health and safety, equal opportunities and other relevant policies and procedures.
  • Help be responsible for the security of all staff. Ensure that the security, health and wellbeing of staff are ensured and staff management and other processes and policies and systems reflect the NGO's principles of equity and fairness.
  • To perform such other responsibilities as agreed with your line management.

Partnerships

  • The Communication and Media Coordinator will be primarily responsible for the management of the media and communications contributions to the south offices awards portfolio including partnership and sub-awards agreements.
  • Build connections with local media outlets (tv, radio, and written) and share with them transalted PRs and Active Statements that can be published at the national level.

Programme Support

  • Excellent planning, management and coordination skills, with the ability to organise a demanding workload comprised of diverse and challenging tasks and responsibilities
  • Excellent story editing and English language skills.
  • Arabic to English translation skills for editing ACCM donor report contributions from the field.
  • Proven story telling skills.
  • Proven experience of establishing and running capacity development in the field.
  • Work with other communication and media colleagues in Save the Children’s country and regional teams to identify new stories and angles that might be of interest internationally. 
  • Work with Save the Children’s communication and programme colleagues to gather information, then design and produce content.  The content should be child-focused and in line with Save the Children’s mandate and policies. 
  • Work with Monitoring and Evaluation team to ensure accountability, transparency and effectiveness towards children, families and communities.

Any relevant tertiary qualification 

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Essential

  • Previous experience working in communications and media field. 
  • Experience delivering broadcast quality media products, photos and video.
  • Significant editorial experience, with the ability to produce high quality materials according to Save the Children’s guidelines.
  • Proven experience in producing content for a wide range of audiences and styles, with an innovative, creative approach. 
  • Evidence of excellent verbal and written communication skills in English & Arabic, for a wide range of different audiences including children, families, donors, journalists and the ‘general public’
  • An initiative-taking, proactive, and flexible attitude with the ability to manage and prioritise an unpredictable workload and solve problems quickly with limited support
  • Excellent relationship building skills 
  • Politically and culturally sensitive with qualities of patience, tact and diplomacy 
  • Education to university level in a relevant subject or equivalent field experience
  • Previous experience of working in non-profit or humanitarian programmes highly desirable
  • Commitment to Save the Children values
