GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:
Mercy Corps (MC) is a non-profit, non-aligned, secular non-governmental (NGO) humanitarian relief and development organization, registered in the United States and Scotland with offices in more than 40 countries around the world, including Yemen, where the organization has recently expanded with a robust humanitarian response in the governorates of Sana’a, Taiz and Aden.  
Political instability, civil insecurity, an intensified war, and localized conflicts have plunged the country into a serious humanitarian crisis, and put into further jeopardy an already precarious humanitarian situation of Yemen.

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:
The IYCF & Hygiene Promotion Officer will identify and assess the key IYCF, Nutrition, hygiene and sanitation practices to be addressed and whom to engage and develop appropriate communications strategy to promote safe practices in the targeted area.
She / he will ensure that an empowering approach to working with communities is employed and all activities are carried out in a way that is sensitive to community needs and promotes the full and equal participation of women, men, children and youth

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

With the support of the Program Coordinator design and manage assessments and studies in order to identify Hygiene and Nutrition practices and WASH-related health risks and priorities in target communities.
•    In cooperation with other program staff and the support of the program Manager, design and plan nutrition and hygiene promotion activities to reduce these risks, with reference to both physical and behavioral aspects.
•    Recruit and train local volunteers and supervise their activities.
•    Implement hygiene promotion activities appropriate to the context in close collaboration with the senior program staff to ensure that technical and social aspects of water and sanitation programming are integrated.
•    Provide regular reports on nutrition and hygiene issues and program progress against work plans and program activities including drafting donor reports according to the donor requirements.
•    Liaise directly with communities, local institutions and local authorities on nutrition, hygiene and sanitation issues as well as other agencies operational in target districts regularly to ensure coordination and effective implementation of activities.
•    Implement, support, monitor and report on Nutrition & WASH hygiene promotion activities with targeted beneficiaries and communities. Ensure transparent implementation of all field based activities and provides a conduit for suggestions, feedback from the communities to project and Mercy Corps management.
•    Watch and report on any new needs arising in the project target areas. 
•    Ensure that within the target beneficiaries and communities that the project activities are focusing on the needs and the interventions are gender sensitive.
•    Conducts field visits for monitoring of activities implementation, solving of problems inside the communities related to project’s interventions.
•    Prepare periodical progress reports about achieved activities, remaining activities challenges and obstacles and suggested solving or recommendation.
•    Ensure hygiene promotion interventions, campaigns and field visits, with awareness of gender and other cross cutting issues.
•    Give input for monthly, quarterly and final reports for the project
•    Conduct TOT training for other field team members on communication skills and hygiene sessions.
•    Provide capacity building support to community committees (where applicable) to encourage local management of the activities.
•    Promote safe WASH practices, including appropriate use and maintenance of WASH facilities and services.
•    Ensure that action is taken to mitigate priority water and sanitation related health risks.  
•    Perform other work - related duties and responsibilities and assignment as may be assigned by the supervisor
•    Conduct himself/herself both professionally and personally in such a manner as to bring credit to Mercy Corps and to not jeopardize its humanitarian mission.
•    Other duties as assigned

ACCOUNTABILITY:    
REPORTS DIRECTLY TO    Program Manager, Senior Program Officer or FSL Coordinators depending on the location.
WORKS DIRECTLY WITH    Program team

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
•    Degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, or related Social Sciences with a bias in hygiene and sanitation practices or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
•    Minimum of 2 years relevant work experience, previous specifically experience in hygiene an added advantage.
•    Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with a team.
•    Good computer skills
•    Ability to work with culturally diverse groups of people.
•    Ability to travel and work in difficult conditions and under pressure
•    Excellent interpersonal, communication, public speaking, and strategic planning skills required.
•    English fluency and writing skills are required. 
•    Knowledge on Nutrition & WASH promotion, and ability to develop training on the topic.
•    Ability to engage with local communities in rural areas.
•    Physically able to spend the long periods of time in the field.
•    Ability to think independently and problem solve.
•    Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
•    Honest, hardworking and committed to community development.
•    Self-starter, flexible, resilient and a sense of humor.
•    Previous humanitarian experience

SUCCESS FACTORS:
The successful Nutrition &Hygiene Promotion Officer will have a strong knowledge of hygiene promotion methodologies and an experience conducting trainings and ToTs. S/he should be willing to travel regularly to the field and interact with community leaders.
