Position:  Nutrition Officer

Reports to:  Health and nutrition coordinator

Location:     Based in Aden, with travel to field

Job objectives:

This position is responsible for the day-to-day management and smooth running of the Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) program in Aden, Lahj, Abyan and Taiz in line with the MoPHP national CMAM protocols, INTERSOS protocols, and project proposals.

Responsibilities/duties:

Main Duties:

The officer is responsible for coordinating the implementation of nutrition project activities, as part of the wider coordinated approach which aims to lower under-5 mortality rates in INTERSOS program operation areas in south Yemen through community-based identification, treatment, and prevention of both Moderate Acute Malnutrition and Severe Acute Malnutrition (MAM/SAM), and promotion of Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) practices. She/he will be involved in training, supervising, and assisting field staff to ensure the best possible health care, community health, and nutrition services are delivered to children U5. She/he will work in constant collaboration with the INTERSOS Health and Nutrition coordinator, INTERSOS Health Program Managers, District and Governorate MoPHP staff, the GHO/DHO nutrition Coordinators, other local authorities, and community members to share nutrition issues to improve/promote the nutrition of the vulnerable groups from the targeted communities.

Reporting:

  • Ensure that nutrition information for monthly reports is collected and compiled appropriately from all INTERSOS supported sites.
  • Compile statistical data and draft appropriate reports.
  • Analyze nutrition situation and prevailing trends and provide constructive written feedback for nutrition field staff and community health volunteers (CHVs).

Technical Support:

  • Training of INTERSOS staff and health facilities workers on the implementation of treatment of acute malnutrition.
  • Support adherence to the current MAM/SAM protocols in the supported health facilities
  • Plan and coordinate community mobilization, health and nutrition education activities
  • Support quality supervision of diagnostic and treatment services and community-level implementation of the programs.
  • Provide a technical guidance and management on a daily basis for all the nutrition components of INTERSOS projects.
  • Deliver a capacity building for all the nutrition staff in a planned manner and in line with MOPHP protocols.
  • Contribute to monthly meetings with the project teams and report the outcome to the health and nutrition coordinator.

Coordination & Representation:

  • Support the coordination and implementation of nutrition activities and ensure that INTERSOS programs follows the MoPHP guidelines.
  • In collaboration with the health and nutrition coordinator, support efforts that encourage the local authorities, particularly the GHO/DHOs, are involved in the planning, implementation, and monitoring of a quality Nutrition program.
  • Liaise with key partners including district health departments, local leaders, NGO partners, and other stakeholders (as necessary) to encourage good links between nutrition program and other sectors.
  • Support integration of nutrition PHC activities, particularly as regards Nutrition Education, EPI, and other child health and nutrition services (supplementary food program and therapeutic feeding center) (SFPs and TFCs).
  • Support good integration between the nutrition, health and protection programs.

Administrative and Other Duties:

  • Provide monthly reports on activities to the health and nutrition coordinator.
  • Follow-up of supplies consumption and orders
  • Overall, planning of stock levels, making sure that they are sufficient for the functioning of the health facilities (weekly, monthly, or quarterly)
  • In coordination with Senior pharmacist, Make a monthly physical inventory of all nutrition supplies.
  • Orient new staff on program activity.
  • Under the direction of the health and nutrition coordinator, take up responsibilities such as overall program management; work planning; attendance at regional/governorate level meetings and workshops.
  • Any new procedures and guidelines designated by the Yemen mission.

Overall, the following is required in performing these tasks:

  • Adherence to Humanitarian principles (Neutrality, Impartiality, Independence, and Humanity)
  • Clear & timely communication to line management
  • Ensure full confidentiality of the received information
  • Willing to take any other relevant task given by the supervisor.

Qualification/level requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in medicine or nutrition is required.
  • 3+ years’ experience in implementing and supporting nutrition programming.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in reporting nutrition activities, especially tracking donation and distribution of therapeutic feeding.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in training.
  • Sound knowledge and nutritional support services like CMAM, MAM and IYCF.
  • Sound knowledge and experience in primary and secondary health care services.
  • Previous experience in working with various international NGOs is strongly preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, public speaking, and strategic planning skills required.
  • Ability to represent, liaise and negotiate at different levels (national, provincial and local) with NGOs/ INGOs, donors, government, etc.
  • Strong English and Arabic skills, written and spoken. Ability to write reports in English is required.
  • Strong Microsoft package skills (MS Word, MS Excel, Power-point)
