Job Title: Nutrition Officers (2) 
Department: Program  
Reports to: Nutrition Coordinator
Location: One in Azariq District and One in Qaatba District ( Al Dhale'e Governorate), Yemen

PROGRAM SUMMARY

Global Communities (GC) has designed the Yemen Emergency Food Assistance III (YEFA III) program to save and improve lives in targeted areas of Al Azariq and Qatabah districts in Al Dhale’e governorate. 
Purpose: To increase food security, improve dietary diversity, and reduce acute malnutrition for an estimated 29,050 highly vulnerable individuals through emergency food assistance and supporting nutrition and hygiene interventions.  YEFA III will achieve its purpose through interventions within the following sectors and subsectors:

  • Food Assistance – Unconditional food assistance
  • Nutrition –Maternal, Infant, and Young Child Nutrition in Emergencies (MIYCN-E) and Hygiene Promotion through Improve community hygiene practices.

Global Communities would complement voucher programming with nutritional education. GC will promote nutritional best practice to improve the nutritional content of household food purchases, particularly for vulnerable individuals, including children under 5 and PLW. These practices will include exclusive breastfeeding, optimal complementary feeding, hygiene and sanitation, and strengthening dietary diversity.
 Nutrition Messaging: GC will disseminate key nutritional messages throughout program activities. Specifically, the project will leverage and adapt Information, Education and Communication (IEC) messages and materials, including Infant and Young Child Feeding in emergencies (IYCF-e) materials that will be shared with households throughout program implementation. GC will disseminate messaging during the initial household orientation sessions on voucher programming, community sensitization, voucher distribution, and PDM visits. GC will also display key messages at distribution/vendor sites. GC will prioritize IEC materials developed and/or supported by the Nutrition Cluster.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Under the supervision of the Nutrition coordinator, the Nutrition Officer will be responsible for promoting community nutritional best practices to improve the nutritional content of household food purchases and utilization, particularly for vulnerable individuals, including children under 5 and Pregnant and Lactating Women (PLWs), as a complementary package to voucher food programming in south Yemen/Al Dhale'e governorate. 
The Nutrition Officers will support the Nutrition Coordinator in his/her design and management of complementary nutrition activities proposed under the program.  The Nutrition Officers will support with logistics for the training of trainers for the Community Health Volunteers (CHV). They will follow up on identified needs to support the CHVs, support coordination efforts with relevant clusters and implementing partners within the targeted geographic areas, and document lessons learned from the nutrition activities. Level of Effort: full time; 100% LOE over the life of the program. The duties are specified in particular are as follows:

  • Manage and support the implementation of Maternal and Child Health and Nutrition (MCHN) health and nutritional education activities at the community level in villages of one of the two targeted districts in Al Dhale'e. 
  • Liaise with the Health Office in Al Dhale'e and other partners to ensure that nutrition education practices are comprehensively understood following set guidelines promoted by the project.
  • Manage and prepare for the implementation of Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) training according to MoPHP guidelines.
  • Supervise and work closely with community health volunteers in the targeted district. 
  • Support and supervise the CHVs to take accurate anthropometrics measurements.
  • Work in close collaboration with the CHVs and health staff in terms of identification of the beneficiaries, screening and referral, community case follow-up. 
  • Ensure that CHVs Provide individual nutrition counselling based on the nutrition status, age of the child/pregnancy stage, provide information on the MCHN activities, the use of the ration.
  • Follow and monitor the distribution of IEC materials among beneficiaries and the Vendors stores.
  • Ensure CHVs visits to the targeted beneficiaries for the nutrition follow-up of each beneficiary based on MUAC reading and refer the cases with malnutrition to nearest health facility.
  • Prepare monthly activity reports.
  • Supervise CHVs in carrying out community based nutritional promotional activities targeting community groups. Activities will primarily include IYCF sessions, community feedback meetings and social mobilization toward overall objectives. 
  • Support the collection, processing and verification of reports/forms that are required to maintain program databases.
  • In Coordination with Al Dhale'e Health office facilitate the identification and initial Training for CHVs in targeted area.
  • Due to the nature of the program’s activities, the above-mentioned tasks are indicative only and are subject to change. Other/additional tasks may be delegated to meet programmatic objectives.
  • These duties require two Nutrition Officers, one will work in Azariq and the other in Qaatba districts respectively.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Health Sciences, Food and/or Nutrition or equivalent field is required.
  • At least (2) years’ work experience at supervisory level in community nutrition work and implementation of nutrition education programs is required.

TECHNICAL SKILLS  

  • Previous working experience with INGOs/UN agencies implementing Community Nutrition projects in Yemen.
  • Good Understanding of IYCF and community management of malnutrition.
  • Proven capacity to supervise, train and coach local staff and Community Health Volunteers.
  • Ability and willingness to frequently travel to the field.
  • Very good in written and verbal English and Arabic is required. Must be able to read and interpret documents, and communicate with others as necessary to perform job duties effectively.
  • Proficient in standard Microsoft Office package (Word, Excel, Outlook) and typing.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage personal stress levels.
  • Sense of neutrality and ability to work across Yemen, in cooperation with all parties to the conflict.
  • Proven success in working with complex teams in difficult environments.
  • Be Based in Al Dhale'e governorate.

From July 2021 until May 2022.
