The Opportunity:

The post-holder will be responsible for managing the webpage and social media accounts of Save the Children Yemen. This includes managing and implementing the social media strategy and workplan, as well as creating, editing, packaging and tailoring content that is in line with the wider strategic approach of the response, and that helps maintaining public engagement and interest in the humanitarian situation in Yemen and the work of Save the Children. She/he will work with different teams across the response to keep track of any development in the context and to identify potential opportunities to engage the public in promoting Save the Children’s key messages and to increase the organisation’s digital prominence and visibility in the social media realm.  They will also be the media/communications representative in Aden and support any media engagement in the South.

The post holder is responsible to support the creation and maintenance of information networks within Save the Children Yemen response, its partners, and the wider communities where Save the Children operates. He/she will ensure that these networks are fully utilised to maintain an accurate, timely and up-to-date flow of information to feed into Save the Children internal and external media and communications channels. He/she will analyse the collected data on a regular basis and will identify any trends, patterns, an/or insights that can be used by the media team to draw attention to the humanitarian situation in Yemen.     

The post-holder will support the process of identifying, collecting, editing, and producing human interest stories, including feature stories for media and success stories for programmes, to build a comprehensive library of written and visual content that can represent the work of Save the Children in Yemen, as well as drawing a realistic image of the hardship and challenging environment children are forced to endure due to the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Yemen.

The post-holder will also provide technical media and communications support to all field offices to ensure they’re capable of producing quality content for internal and external use and will provide the programme and awards teams with all the support they need in terms of donor visibility requirements. She/he will also provide the different teams in the country office and field offices with needed capacity building training on visibility, content gathering and storytelling, and identifying feature stories for media, as well child safeguarding in media.

He/she will adhere to policies and procedures that ensure the rights and wellbeing of families and children are prioritised in all materials produced and disseminated (voice, photo, video, written).

S/he will help to build and maintain the social media profile and website of Save the Children and contribute to the broader objectives of raising the profile of Save the Children's work in Yemen.

Key Areas of Responsibilities:

Social Media:

  • Manage and implement the social media strategy and workplan to ensure a consistent, sustainable, systematized, and engaging flow of social media posts across all Save the Children’s Yemen social media accounts
  • Identify impactful stories, quotes, photos, videos, and pieces of information for social media use.
  • Create and prepare all planned social media posts on regular (weekly/monthly) basis, ensure they’re approved, scheduled for posting at the right date/time.   
  • Proofread and double check all planned social media posts and ensure they are in line with Save the Children policies and guidelines.
  • Constantly monitor all social media accounts to ensure they are in line with SC policies and guidelines
  • Work closely with campaigns team and the multimedia coordinator to ensure impactful content is produced and planned ahead to be posted on upcoming media moments.
  • Monitor audience interactions, including comments, mentions, and messages, and ensure the correct teams receive the conveyed messages in order to provide the approved response when possible.

Communications:

  • Support the implementation of the media and communications annual strategy and workplan to ensure a smooth, efficient, and strategic delivery of the needed technical media and comms support to the advocacy, campaigns, awards, operations, and programme teams. 
  • Monitor local and international news outlets, social media platforms, and relative internet sources to capture and communicate any developments in the context in Yemen and to ensure our products are reflecting the latest verified data available
  • Work with different internal and external stakeholders, including SC programme teams, volunteers, partners’ staff, and community members, to gather relevant information and provide inputs to PRs, factsheets, social media channels, and newsletters.
  • Provide regular updates/new information concerning context developments and programme updates to inform advocacy, media and communications outputs.
  • Support the media and comms coordinator to ensure the adherence to, and the understanding of, the Save the Children’s -and its donors’- information and visibility policies by all staff in the country office and field offices.
  • Support the media and comms coordinator to proactively identify and gather powerful human-interest stories that can be used for donor reporting, media, fundraising and advocacy, in adherence with NGO’s child safeguarding and consent procedures.
  • Support the media and comms coordinator to translate, transcript, write and proofread all communications, media, and multimedia products produced in Yemen.
  • Support the media and comms coordinator to plan, coordinate and accompany visits of VIP guests/journalists and media teams to program sites or field offices and to provide media and comms support including translation, content gathering.
  • Adhere to media and communications policies and procedures in Yemen.

Web Master:

  • Support the media and comms coordinator to manage Save the Children webpage and ensure all relevant media and comms content produced in Yemen are uploaded and updated in timely and impactful manner.
  • Regularly add/change and edit the content on the Save the Children Yemen website to reflect any development in the context.
  • Ensure a consistent look and feel across the Web site by promoting uniform fonts, formatting, icons, images, and layout, and ensuring Save the Children visual identity guidelines are followed.
  • Find, diagnose, and fix any arising technical problems, including broken links (both internal and external), typographical errors, and formatting inconsistencies.
  • Create and maintain an archive for Web site templates and images.
  • Receive and respond to all e-mail messages for the Webmaster.

Other

  • Other responsibilities as delegated by the Media and Comms Manager or the ACCM Director.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • B.A degree with at least three years of experience in the domain of Media, Communications and Journalism.
  • A university degree or proven experience in corporate social media management with evidence of successful management of international corporate social media accounts.
  • Proven experience in producing communications and media content for a wide range of audiences with different styles, with an innovative and creative approach.
  • Evidence of excellent verbal and written communication skills in English & Arabic, for a wide range of different audiences including children, families, donors, journalists and the ‘general public’
  • Evidence of versatile, creative and highly engaging storytelling skills.
  • Significant editorial experience, with the ability to proofread, edit and change the writing style in order to tailor the text for different purposes.
  • Previous experience working in international non-profit organisations and/or international media broadcasters is highly preferable.
  • Proven experience in data management and data analysis is highly preferable.
  • Flexible, open and willing to support team and change responsibilities as needed.
  • Excellent planning, management and coordination skills, with the ability to organise a demanding workload comprised of diverse and challenging tasks and responsibilities
  • The capacity and willingness to be extremely flexible and accommodating in difficult and sometimes insecure working circumstances.
  • Politically and culturally sensitive with qualities of patience, tact and diplomacy
  • Commitment and interest in Save the Children's mission, vision and values. In particular, a good understanding of Save the Children mandate and child focus and an ability to ensure this continues to underpin our support.
