Background

The Society for Humanitarian Solidarity (SHS) is a nonprofit humanitarian NGO based in the in Aden, Yemen. It was founded in 1995.

The SHS provides assistance to refugees and migrants who arrive in Yemen every year.  The organization also assists the local community in Yemen.  The NGO won the Nansen Refugee Award, dedicated by the UNCHR. SHS has partnerships with UNCHR, OCHA, UNFPA and WFP

PROGRAM/DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: The Protection Assistant works within the Programs and Projects Unit committed to providing reliable and support to program activities and donors to achieve efficient service to program beneficiaries.

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY: The Protection assistant  provides general protection of case management services by ensuring that specialized needs are referred to appropriate service providers, caseworkers are safeguarded at all times, and that beneficiaries are accorded safety, respect, and confidentiality of his/her information and his/her right to access services without any discrimination. The Protection assistant provides services in compliance with best-practice and international standards in protection response including assessment of need, development of case plan and access to services, follow-up, and case closure.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

  1. Leads the scheduling of and participation in monitoring missions in collaboration with the Programme Officer. 
  2. Undertakes field monitoring missions and collects protection information on a regular basis.
  3. Facilitates interviews and focus group discussions with IDPs, refugees, returnees, migrants, and host community members.
  4. Contributes to drafting and updating of regular protection reports including utilizing digital data collection systems.
  5. Contributes to reporting on protection trends from the field on a regular basis.
  6. Maintains an up to date and in-depth understanding of community dynamics in the communities monitored, including of the surrounding host community.
  7. Supports protection monitoring team’s field access by meeting with relevant stakeholders and local authorities as required, in collaboration with the Field Officer and Project Manager.
  8. Develops and maintains effective working relationships with other INGOs, donors,  and other key stakeholders to ensure active coordination, collaboration, and information dissemination.
  9. Continuously checks and revises with the Field during any activities including distributions to make sure all the guidelines and protection are achieved. 
  10. Supervises and provides technical guidance to Field team.
  11. Conducts himself/herself both professionally and personally in such a manner as to bring credit to SHS and to not jeopardize its humanitarian mission.
  12. Other duties as assigned.

ACCOUNTABILITY:

REPORTS DIRECTLY TO: Program Officer

WORKS DIRECTLY WITH: Project Manager, Program Officer, Data Management Unit, Reporting officer and Field Officer.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • A bachelor’s degree in Social Work, or closely related field is required. 
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in protection services or relevant humanitarian action with proven field experience is required. 
  • Good written and oral communication skills are required.
  • Good interpersonal and problem-solving skills are required.

Language 

Professional working level in Arabic and English languages.
