In Yemen, JSI has been managing public health programs since 1988, focusing on improving child health and routine immunization, strengthening the supply chain, and improving reproductive, maternal, and newborn health.
Project Overview
The Strengthening Healthcare Access project is a five-year USAID-funded initiative aimed at enhancing access to and equitable utilization of evidence-based maternal, newborn, and child health; nutrition; family planning; and reproductive health (MNCHN/FP/RH) services in Yemen. Led by JSI, the project collaborates with partners to employ a community-led strategy encompassing demand generation, supply-side reinforcement, and enabling environment support. Through engagement with midwives, community reproductive health volunteers, and community structures, the project will create awareness, facilitate access, and enhance care quality.
Position Description:
The FP/RH Specialist post is located in JSI’s office in Aden. S/he will report to the Technical director, who provides overall direction and supervision, and plays the lead role for FP/RH interventions in the USAID’s Strengthening Healthcare Access Project in Yemen and maintain close coordination with MoPHP and relevant stakeholders.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provide technical assistance and mentorship to project staff, partners, and stakeholders to ensure quality implementation FP/RH interventions and adopt learning initiatives.
- Work closely with other health program teams to ensure integrated approaches to reproductive health.
- Identify barriers to family planning and reproductive health access and design interventions accordingly.
- Advocate for family planning policies and practices that enhance access to reproductive health services.
- Work with all program’s team to ensure integrated approaches to FP/RH.
- Ensure FP competencies and gender integrated in all project related activities.
- Ensure the project and its team comply with the donor’s FP/RH compliance.
- Follow-up project related FP/RH indicators and provide guidance to reach targets and improve outcomes.
- Maintain flexibility to take on added responsibility, when needed.
- Monthly review/ update of workplan with consortium partners and feedback the technical director.
- Discuss with partner challenges, activities and implementation matters.
- Lead the review and approval of FP documents and guidelines with the MoPHP.
- Lead the FP/RH supply chain component of the project.
- Supervisor and facilitate all FP/RH awareness and SBC activities in close collaboration with the project SBC manger and team.
- Actively participate in the all project’s reports and provide technical guidance.
- Represent the project and actively participate in the external meetings (clusters, TWGs, etc).
- Follow and support all policies and requirements related to staff safety and security.
- Uphold JSI’s policies around accountability, fraud/ethics management, child safeguarding, and protection from sexual exploitation and abuse.
- Travel to field sites, as necessary.
- Any additional responsibilities, as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Medicine, Midwifery or Public Health.
- At least five years of experience working in FP/RH projects/services.
- Experience in FP counseling and using methods.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage diverse populations and stakeholders.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to navigate challenges in fragile contexts.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions independently
- Ability to cope with stressful situations and frustrations, demonstrating extreme flexibility
- Team player, with the ability to relate to and motivate local staff effectively
- Creative and able to work with limited resources
- Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills in Arabic and English required;
- Expert computer skills in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook;
- Familiarity working with the Google Suite of projects (Gmail, Drive, Sheets, etc.) preferred;
