Doctor Anaesthetist
Position status: Full time.
Location: Kilo Project in IBB Governorate – Al Qaeda hospital
Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, humanitarian, non-governmental organization providing assistance to people in need as a result of natural and man-made disasters, irrespective of race, religion, ideology or politics.
Main Purpose
Organize and carry out anesthetic medical activities, according to MSF policies, protocols, and universal hygiene standards and in close collaboration with the surgeon and other medical staff and increase the knowledge and practical skills of the anesthetic staff through on the job training and knowledge transfer to ensure the quality of care provided to patients.
Accountabilities
- Carry out pre-operative consultations evaluating the risks of operating in collaboration with the surgeon, providing the patient with appropriate information and deciding the type of anaesthetics to be used, to ensure the best conditions prior to the surgery. Carry-out all anaesthesia related activities during surgery to ensure safe, adequate anaesthesia.
- Preparing beforehand the drugs, material, and equipment required.
- Administering and maintaining anaesthetics following the rules of hygiene and asepsis in force.
- Monitoring patients throughout the intervention.
- Ensure transfer of patients to the recovery room, and full recovery of the patient’s consciousness and setting analgesic protocol
- Advise on Postoperative care in both Intensive Care Unit and wards with the surgeon, including fluid management, oxygenation monitoring and airway care and chest physiotherapy and mobilization, with special focus on patient’s pain relief during the recovering process.
- Implement and supervise hygiene rules, procedures and MSF protocols in OT/recovery, anaesthesia material (decontamination, sterilization, storage conditions, etc.) to ensure the safety and protection of patients and staff.
- Ensure good functioning and maintenance of OT equipment (oxygen extractor, ventilation, equipment, etc)
- Organize the tasks of personnel under his/her responsibility and participate and carry-out other team management activities (recruitment, training, performance evaluation, motivation, internal/external communication, etc.), to ensure having the appropriate team in terms of size, capabilities, and skills.
- Collaborate with other departments in the project (responding to accident emergency department requests, intervening in support of other services when needed, etc.), and participate in any emergency activity or exploratory mission, to support the overall MSF project with his/her expertise and capabilities.
- Ensure proper fulfillment of administrative procedures and documents (fill in of patients’ files, forms, statistics, data base, etc.), and elaborate regular reporting about results, proceedings and problematic situations and cases, to have updated and correct information about the day-to-day activity in the project and support decision-taking.
MSF Section/Context Specific Accountabilities
- Ensure all anesthesia activities as per MSF admission criteria, protocols, and guidelines. Provide all anesthesia interventions for the patients inside the OT, ER and procedure rooms, as per anesthesia standards.
- Respect and ensure that Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) measures implemented at Al Qaeda Hospital are followed. Perform the anesthesia pre-assessment for every patient (available in Kilo hospital) schedule for the next day.
- Participate in the organization of the operating theatre activities, in collaboration with the OT su-pervisor and the surgeon. Active participation in the daily rounds of ICU and every other day in the IPD; also providing support in case of need to the IPD MD.
- Provide technical support and consultations for the departments as required, ICU, IPD, ER, fol-low up, dressing room and MOH departments (for life-saving emergencies). Ensure the respect and follow up of the anesthesia and surgical checklist in collaboration with the surgeon, operating theater nurse and the anesthesia technician for every patient.
- Fill properly all the required documentation for each patient, according to MSF standards and re-specting the law, always keeping in mind that the file is a medical legal document. Participate ac-tively in the monitoring and the reporting of anesthesia, medical and surgical activities by improv-ing the documentation (correctly fill in patient files, OT daily schedule from IPD, forms, statistics, medical reports).
- Ensure a proper handover to the next duty team. Active participation in the capacity building for the anesthesia technicians and provide 360 feedback for their evaluations. Follow up the narcot-ics consumption, ensuring the proper filling of the documentation and collection of the empty ampoules. Report immediately to the line manager any problem arising in the service, especially the loss/ robbery/damage of medical equipment or medicines.
- Ensure an adequate usage of the medical equipment, material, and any item supply by the organ-ization for the benefit of the patients. Accept and apply MSF principles, values, and internal regu-lations. Apply MSF protocols and adheres to the rules implemented by MSF within Kilo hospital. Participate proactively in capacity building activities: trainings, PSI reporting, morbidity, and mor-tality review, etc.
Requirements
Education
- Doctor Anaesthesiologist diploma recognized by the state essential.
Experience
- Desirable, two-year experience as an anaesthesiologist. Having worked in MSF or other NGO’s and in developing countries is desirable.
Languages:
- Essential Arabic fluency, English is an asset.
