Position: Media and Communications Manager

Location: Yemen

Grade: 3a

Contract Length: 12 months

The Opportunity:

With support from the Advocacy, Campaigns, Communications and Media Director, the Media and Communications Manager will lead on and manage the media and communications (both internal and external) work for the Yemen Country Office and its operational workflow process, to ensure that all different areas and programmes are on track for the delivery of all communications materials, that advocacy messages are reflected in Yemen CO’s work and that the communications and media products coming out of the Yemen Country Office meet Save the Children quality standards. He/she should be a dynamic team player who takes initiative to propose and follow through on new ideas, to raise the visibility of the organisation, celebrate success, promote campaigns and advocacy partnerships and develop innovative ways to communicate to target audiences. 

He/she will support the production and quality control of communications material including case studies, videos, photos and graphics, produce fundraising materials and to communicate the situation for children to public supporters.

SCOPE OF ROLE

Reports to: Yemen Country Office Advocacy, Campaigns, Communications and Media Director

Staff reporting to this post: Media and Communications Coordinator (Sanaa), Media and Communications Coordinator (Aden), and Content Collection Consultants (as needed)

Budget Responsibilities: None

Key Areas of Responsibilities

Communications

  • Maintain overall accountability for communications work, internal and external, support the Info and Communications Officer and the team to effectively implement the communications strategy and deliver high quality communications products for digital and traditional media
  • Support the development of a high profile for Save the Children’s Yemen work through the production of high quality, well researched, and well multimedia and written products
  • Gather information, content and interviews as necessary for external communications work, and produce videos, press releases and public information products in support of the ACCM Director 
  • Responding quickly and appropriately to external requests, including the regional office and members, for information, especially on the conflict
  • Work with Regional Office to identify potential media moments and campaigns communications material requirement to highlighting identified advocacy issues
  • Conduct content gathering visits to project activities/events, to collect high quality case studies, photos, etc.
  • Edit films, photos and stories as appropriate and needed. 
  • Liaise with the regional office to ensure sign off, following specific guidelines, on all Yemen crisis materials for external use.
  • Ensure that the branding and communication guidelines of Save the Children are uniformly and consistently followed across the Yemen Country Office.
  • With support from the info/comms officer, develop and maintain the Yemen Country Office digital assets database, including photos, videos and case studies, in line with the Save the Children Content Hub standards.

Media

  • In line with agreed external communications protocols, support the development of products for media work for Save the Children Yemen Country Office through the production of high quality, well researched, and well written products (in a variety of media) reflective of the mandate.
  • Liaise and maintain contact with the Regional Office and members to implement communication activities, including facilitating visits and working within incoming communications surge support during emergencies when necessary.
  • Respond quickly and appropriately to external requests for information.
  • Facilitate media interviews with Yemen Country Director or designate, undertake media interviews as needed and relevant
  • Work with Regional Office Media Manager to identify potential media moments highlighting identified advocacy issues

Internal communications and information-sharing

  • Provide a system of regular information dissemination support production of information documents and publications for the Yemen Country Office program and internal stakeholders
  • Work with the Heads of Offices to develop an internal reporting system that ensures the cascading of information from the top-down and the bottom-up channelling of information
  • Oversee ability to scale up the delivery of robust communications material during emergencies per the agreed protocols and requests from other Members and Save the Children International
  • Lead on the delivery of high-quality communication materials for all programmes, including handouts, factsheets, reports and infographics
  • Build capacity and provide training for programme staff on communications skills and policies.
  • Support the development of project communications plans and provide advice for programme staff. 
  • Develop and deliver a clear and effective system for internal communications.
  • Produce an internal monthly newsletter

Strategic input to Country Programme

  • Lead on the development of a Yemen Country Office Communications strategy in liaison with ACCM Director, programmes team and area office within both the emergency and development contexts. 
  • Lead on relationship with area offices communication staff and relationship with partner communication staff including capacity building, training and quality control of communications products as necessary.

Building and maintaining effective relationships

  • Develop and maintain good internal relationships with the Area offices, GMU and SCI members.
  • Develop and maintain good external relationships with our partners, the media and the government if needed. 
  • Work with members and Country Office staff to ensure appropriate resourcing and timely delivery of agreed deliverables.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • University degree or equivalent experience in journalism, media, communications or similar discipline. 

Essential

  • High level of both spoken and written English and Arabic
  • At least five years of professional experience in communications, multimedia, journalism, media or external communications work in an INGO or media setting 
  • At least two year of experience communications material production
  • Experience and understanding of the in-Yemen crisis

Desirable

  • Previous INGO experience 
  • Previous multimedia production experience
  • Save the Children previous experience
