VACANCY: HEALTH PROMOTER SUPERVISOR For "Emergency Intervention"

Position Status: Full-time Location: Sana'a, approx. 80% of time deployed in different governorates Contract Duration: 1 year with possibility of renewal

Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, humanitarian, non-governmental organisation providing assistance to people in need as a result of natural and man-made disasters, irrespective of race, religion, ideology, or politics.

Project Summary

Emergency response constitutes one of the core activities of Doctors without Borders. MSF Switzerland is recruiting new staff for a project that intervenes and provides activities in case of emergencies such as cholera, measles, and other epidemics as well as trainings based on the intervention needs according to pre-defined intervention criteria. This team is based in Sana'a, but all team members are expected to work in interventions in different governorates and locations for about 80% of the time. Flexibility and adaptability to respond to the operational needs as well as to adapt to working and living conditions in the field are core criteria for any new staff member. Given the diverse areas of intervention compliance and acceptance of security restrictions are essential. Furthermore, solution-orientation, as well as very good communication skills and hands-on mentality, are expected. Main Purpose of the Position

In close collaboration with the PMR, implementing and supervising educational campaigns according to MSF values, standards, and procedures in order to increase awareness of the targeted population and to promote prevention and treatment of diseases in the project area.

Accountabilities

  • In close collaboration with the PMR, participate in the definition and update of the HP/IEC strategy and identify indicators in order to monitor HP activities, results, and achievements.
  • Supporting the PMR in organizing and carrying out assessments and research on the impact of HP activities and identifying and reporting the constraints, difficulties, or strong points of the HP strategy inside and outside the medical structures in order to reinforce the link between the communities and the project.
  • Providing support in selecting and developing quality pedagogical communication strategies towards the community. Planning information campaigns, including targets, objectives, methods, and goals in order to increase awareness among the targeted population.
  • Informing, according to protocols, community members and identified risk groups (prisons, army, sexual workers, etc.) about health-related issues.
  • Organizing health awareness sessions for MSF's medical and non-medical staff.
  • Identifying key actors (local authorities, local NGOs, traditional healers, formal or informal authorities) and being the focal point for the networking in order to support the dissemination of health information of the target population, and be the point of reference for the relation and networking with these subjects.
  • Organizing, training, and supervising the HP team in terms of planning and organizing their work, supporting, evaluating, and coaching personnel, collecting reports and reporting the activities of each health worker and regularly visiting communities that are under his/her responsibility.
  • Supervising, in close collaboration with the HR department, the HR-associated processes (recruitment, training/induction, evaluation, potential detection, development, and communication) of the staff under his/her responsibility in order to ensure both the sizing and the amount of knowledge required.
  • Ensuring cleanliness of IEC (information, education, and communication) areas.
  • Collecting and reporting to the medical team any information linked to the health situation of the population and the patient.

MSF Section/Context Specific Accountabilities

  • Analysis of the context (local culture, traditions, habits, health perception) of MET intervention area to adapt health activities and support the social mapping (villages, populations, actors).
  • Define HP strategy which includes all MET scenarios and budget plan (objectives, target population, campaigns, messages, activities, specific actions, etc.).
  • Identify indicators in close collaboration with the PMR in order to monitor HP activities results, and achievement and use the concrete tools to measure and follow up those activities.
  • Conduct patient satisfaction surveys in MET intervention area to improve the quality of service.
  • Develop and adapt HP materials according to the needs and the scenarios of the MET. Ensure content and format have been pre-tested with target groups in order to ensure the adequacy, relevance, and full understanding of the messages.
  • Identify and liaise with other relevant actors (national and International NGOs, authorities) also involved in prevention activities, analyzing interventions, and building cooperative relationships and advocacy, in order to create synergy and improve awareness among the targeted population.
  • Ensure regular collaboration with the medical team, to guarantee that the HP is part of medical activities and contributes to the medical objectives of MET.
  • Contribute to MET context analysis through contacts developed in the communities; report any security threats or unusual events arising in the community to the MET coordination team.

Requirements

Education

  • Essential diploma in social sciences or education/pedagogy / or social work

Experience

  • Essential working experience in MSF (1-year minimum) in health promotion activities, or training-education activities (2 years minimum)

Languages

  • Arabic and English
