NURSE TEAM SUPERVISOR – Al Qanawis
 

Requirements for the Position

Education:

  • Minimum 3 years diploma in nursing after secondary school / desirable to have BA degree.
  • Valid Work permit from medical council.

Experience:

  • Essential 2 years of previous relevant experience.
  • Having worked in MSF or other NGO’s and in developing countries is desirable.

Languages:

  • Mission and local language essential.
  • English language required (minimum at intermediate level).

Other:

  • Essential computer literacy (Word, Excel and Internet).
  • Teamwork, Stress Management.

Description

  • Place of work: Al Qanawis
  • Level: 8
  • Duration: One-year fixed term contract with a possibility of extension.
    • Subjected to a probationary period as per the Yemen labour law.

Main Objectives

Plan, organize, and evaluate the activities concerning nursing and the team associated, according to MSF values, policies and protocols and universal health standards, in order to warrant the quality and continuity of the health care and the development of the plan of action.


Main Responsibilities and Tasks:

  • Carry out the functions and tasks associated to nursing i.e. perform as a nurse or anesthetist, whenever required or needed, in order to optimize the resources, contributing with his/her knowledge and experience.
  • Implement all the protocols and hygiene procedures, and supervise his/her team follow the same standards, in order to warrant the quality of the care and service in his/her speciality.
  • Organize and coordinate the activities of his/her team (week’s schedule, annual leave, absences, etc.), evaluate their performance and define and ensure the needs for training of staff, in order to ensure the coverage of the human resources needs and maintain high standards of quality.
  • Carry out and/or supervise the (decentralized) pharmacy and medical equipment management (drugs orders, follow-up of the stock, storage conditions, inventories, follow-up of expired drugs and their destruction, drugs consumption, etc.) in his or her department, in order to satisfy the needs of material with efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Ensuring that all staff using medical devices are qualified and trained. Ensuring that cleaning and minor maintenance tasks are performed according to the protocols. Reporting any malfunction to the project biomedical service.
  • Carry-out and/or coordinate administrative (exit-paper, transfer-paper, etc.), information and data collection (patient files, forms, statistics, etc.) tasks, and elaborate regular reporting, in order to have updated and reliable information about the day-to-day activity in the project, output/outcome and support decision-taking.
  • Give feedback/ reports to medical focal point.

 

MSF Section/Context-Specific Accountabilities

  • Supervising and supporting the team under his/her responsibility e.g. Operation Theater nurses, anesthetist nurse and sterilization technicians. Planning and organizing their work and coaching them in their work Ensuring the quality of care by respecting and ensuring respect of MSF Operation Theater procedures.
  • Reporting to, communicating and collaborating with the Hospital Nurse Manager to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the Operation Theater activities.
  • Maintaining the organization of the operation theater (Operation Theater) which includes defining the daily and weekly programs, anticipating the needs and adapting the planning as required.
  • Report any irrational consumptions to Hospital Nursing Manager. Monitor expiration dates of ward stock and return any expired items to central pharmacy at morning time.
  • Participate in nursing care when required, particularly during critical case management in post-operative care. Ensure good nursing care is performed by leading the nursing activities.
  • Maintain and promote IPC (Infection prevention control) and hygiene procedures:
    • Demonstrate good IPC measures and apply IPC (Infection Prevention and Control) recommendation.
    • Ensure staff is respecting IPC, and provide instructions when required (handwashing, PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), linen policy, biomed equipment).
    • Report challenges to IPC (Infection Prevention and Control) supervisor and NAM (Nursing activity manager).
  • Collaborate with the Maternity team and IPC (Infection Prevention and Control) supervisor in the implementation and follow up of all the surgical site indicators and the efficient use of the tool accordingly with all documentation and patient follow-up.
  • Highly involved in the referral system of patients in the Maternity department in the hospital:
    • Preparation of the needs of patients in the ambulance.
    • Allocation of referral nurses suitable to be used for referral purposes.
    • Making sure that the referral bags are always updated by the referral nurse.
    • Preparing training specific on how to react in an ambulance during cases like CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), hypoglycaemia, etc.
  • Ensure control of narcotic and psychotropic medications on the unit. Report to HNM (Hospital Nursing Manager) any discrepancies in physical/theoretical stock counts.
  • Share weekly activity achievement/challenges in the departments through a weekly report.
  • Supervise and manage the pharmacy activity and medical equipment with efficiency according to MSF standards and protocols:
    • Responsible for monitoring wards pharmaceutical consumption.
    • Report any irrational consumptions to HNM (Hospital Nursing Manager).
    • Monitor expiration dates of ward stock and return any expired items to the central pharmacy.
