Background

BCHR is a leading national non-governmental humanitarian agency with a global mission to alleviate suffering, poverty and oppression by helping people build secure, productive and just communities. BCHR is a non-profit and non-governmental organization aiming to provide health, nutrition, food security and protection services as a humanitarian response to the escalating socio-economic situation in Yemen since 2015.

The Agriculture Engineer will be under the supervision of the Project Manager, the  Engineer will be responsible for developing proper plans based on the major indicators of the project, to ensure relevant project activities are tracked and maintains to best measure the quality, progress and impacts (results) of all project activities. The position will be based in Taiz Office with frequently travel visits to the targeted areas.

Key Responsibilities

• Project Implementation and Management: Supervise and manage the implementation of agricultural and livelihood activities. This includes ensuring projects are on track, meet their objectives, and adhere to a set budget. This may involve overseeing the distribution of agricultural inputs, such as seeds and farming tools, and providing cash assistance to vulnerable households. 
• Technical Support and Training: Provide technical guidance and training to farmers and community members on modern agricultural practices. This could include teaching techniques for water resource management (like drip irrigation), improving crop production, and effective livestock management. The role may involve training "trainers" or extension workers who can then disseminate this knowledge more broadly.
• Monitoring and Evaluation: Regularly monitor project activities to assess their progress and impact. This includes collecting data on crop yields, livestock health, and the overall improvement in household food security. The engineer would be responsible for preparing reports that detail project achievements, challenges, and lessons learned.
• Community Engagement: Act as a liaison between the project and the local community. The engineer would need to work closely with local authorities, community leaders, and beneficiaries to ensure the project meets their needs and is culturally appropriate. This may involve using a community-based bottom-up approach to identify and prioritize investments.
• Designing and Implementing Infrastructure: This is a core part of the role. The engineer may be involved in designing and supervising the construction of small-scale agricultural infrastructure, such as water reservoirs, land reclamation projects, and irrigation systems. The goal is to build climate-resilient systems that can withstand extreme weather events like droughts and floods.

Required Qualifications and Skills

• Education: A degree in agricultural engineering, or a related field like environmental or civil engineering, is typically required.
• Experience: Experience in agricultural development, particularly in conflict or crisis-affected settings, is highly valued. The ability to work on projects that integrate agriculture with water management and livestock support is crucial.
• Technical Skills: Strong knowledge of agricultural practices relevant to the local context of Taiz, Yemen. This includes an understanding of irrigation systems, crop production, and agricultural mechanization. Experience with data collection and report writing is also important.
• Soft Skills: Excellent communication skills are essential for working with a diverse group of stakeholders. Problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a challenging and sometimes insecure environment are also critical. The role requires a high degree of adaptability and perseverance.
