About Action For Humanity

Action For Humanity (AFH) is an international humanitarian and development organization working with communities affected by crisis, poverty, displacement, and vulnerability. Our work combines humanitarian assistance with longer-term approaches that strengthen resilience, improve well-being, create opportunities, and enable communities to shape their own futures.
As we continue to expand our engagement with communities in Yemen, AFH is seeking an energetic and creative Community Initiatives Coordinator to help turn community ideas, partnerships, and volunteer energy into meaningful initiatives and events.

Position Purpose

The Community Initiatives Coordinator will lead and coordinate a diverse portfolio of community-led and volunteer-driven initiatives that strengthen Action For Humanity's engagement with children, young people, families, local organizations, businesses, institutions, and the wider community.
Unlike a conventional project-based position, this role will have the flexibility to identify opportunities, develop new initiatives, mobilize volunteers, establish partnerships, and organize activities responding to emerging community priorities.
The Coordinator will help design and launch initiatives related to youth empowerment, economic recovery, children's well-being, health, nutrition, education, protection, livelihoods, social inclusion, volunteering, and community resilience, alongside public awareness and fundraising activities.
The role will also serve as an important bridge between Action For Humanity and the communities we serve, helping community members—particularly young people—participate actively in designing and delivering positive local initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

1.    Community Initiatives Development

  • Identify opportunities for innovative community initiatives responding to local priorities and needs.
  • Develop practical concepts for small-scale community activities, campaigns, events, and volunteer-led initiatives.
  • Work with AFH technical teams to develop initiatives related to health, nutrition, livelihoods, economic recovery, education, protection, WASH, youth empowerment, disability inclusion, and other organizational priorities.
  • Encourage community members and volunteers to propose ideas and participate in designing local solutions.
  • Develop simple initiative plans, activity schedules, budgets, partnership arrangements, and implementation plans.
  • Support rapid mobilization of community initiatives in response to emerging humanitarian or social needs.
  • Help transform successful community activities into concepts that could potentially be expanded or incorporated into larger AFH programs.

2.    Youth Engagement and Empowerment

A significant component of the position will focus on creating opportunities for young people to participate positively in their communities.
The Coordinator will:

  • Develop youth-led initiatives that promote volunteering, leadership, entrepreneurship, employability, skills development, creativity, and civic participation.
  • Establish networks of young volunteers who can support community initiatives and AFH activities.
  • Organize youth events, competitions, workshops, community challenges, sports activities, innovation activities, and awareness campaigns.
  • Work with universities, schools, youth organizations, training institutions, businesses, and community groups to develop opportunities for young people.
  • Identify talented and motivated young people who could become community ambassadors, volunteers, or initiative leaders.
  • Encourage young people to develop and implement their own community solutions with appropriate AFH guidance and support.

3.    Children-Focused Community Activities

  • Coordinate safe, inclusive, and engaging activities for children in collaboration with AFH technical teams and partners.
  • Organize recreational, educational, cultural, sports, and well-being activities for children.
  • Develop activities that encourage learning, creativity, social interaction, physical activity, and emotional well-being.
  • Work with schools, community organizations, parents, volunteers, and other partners to expand children's participation.
  • Ensure that all activities involving children comply fully with AFH safeguarding, child protection, and safety requirements.
  • Promote inclusion of children with disabilities and children from vulnerable or marginalized communities.

4.    Volunteer Mobilization and Management

The position will primarily deliver initiatives through volunteers and community networks rather than through a large dedicated project team.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Recruit and mobilize volunteers for community activities and events.
  • Develop and maintain a structured database/network of AFH community volunteers.
  • Match volunteers' interests, experience, and skills with appropriate initiatives.
  • Organize volunteer orientation, induction, briefings, and basic training.
  • Establish volunteer teams and identify volunteer team leaders where appropriate.
  • Develop clear roles, responsibilities, schedules, and codes of conduct for volunteers.
  • Monitor volunteer participation and recognize outstanding volunteer contributions.
  • Create opportunities for volunteers to develop leadership and practical experience.
  • Promote a positive culture of volunteering and community service.
  • Ensure volunteers understand AFH safeguarding, protection, humanitarian principles, and expected standards of conduct.

5.    Community Partnerships

  • Build relationships with local organizations, community groups, youth organizations, universities, schools, businesses, professional associations, foundations, sports organizations, health institutions, and other potential partners.
  • Identify opportunities where partners can contribute expertise, venues, materials, volunteers, sponsorship, or other resources.
  • Coordinate joint community events and initiatives with partners.
  • Maintain regular communication with participating organizations and community stakeholders.
  • Help establish a network of organizations interested in collaborating with AFH on community initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities for corporate and private-sector engagement in community activities.

6.    Events and Public Engagement

Plan and coordinate community and public events that increase participation, awareness, and engagement. Activities may include:

  • Youth forums and community dialogues.
  • Children's activities and community days.
  • Health and nutrition awareness events.
  • Sports and recreational activities.
  • Livelihood and entrepreneurship events.
  • Volunteer campaigns.
  • Environmental and community improvement campaigns.
  • Exhibitions and community markets.
  • University and school engagement activities.
  • International Day campaigns and public awareness activities.
  • Community celebrations and recognition events.
  • Fundraising and solidarity events.

The Coordinator will manage event planning from concept to completion, including partners, volunteers, venues, logistics, participant engagement, communications, safety, documentation, and post-event follow-up.

7.    Community Fundraising and Resource Mobilization

Working with AFH management, partnerships, and communications teams, the Coordinator will help develop creative ways of mobilizing community support for humanitarian and development initiatives.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop ideas for community-based fundraising campaigns and events.
  • Organize fundraising activities supporting agreed AFH humanitarian and community priorities.
  • Engage businesses, institutions, community leaders, and other stakeholders interested in supporting community initiatives.
  • Explore opportunities for sponsorship and in-kind contributions for approved events and activities.
  • Support campaigns during important humanitarian and seasonal periods.
  • Ensure that all fundraising activities follow AFH policies, financial controls, applicable regulations, and organizational approval procedures.
  • Work closely with Communications to develop appropriate messaging and visibility around campaigns.

8.    Community Outreach and Representation

  • Serve as an approachable AFH focal point for community initiatives and volunteering opportunities.
  • Attend relevant community meetings, youth events, university activities, exhibitions, and public events.
  • Introduce AFH's mission and community programs to potential partners and volunteers.
  • Build relationships with community leaders and influential community actors.
  • Collect ideas and feedback from communities regarding potential initiatives.
  • Promote greater community participation in AFH programming.
  • Support AFH representation at relevant public and community events when requested.

9.    Communications and Storytelling

  • Work closely with the Communications team to document community initiatives and their impact.
  • Identify compelling stories involving volunteers, young people, children, partners, and participating communities.
  • Support collection of photographs, videos, testimonials, and human-interest stories in accordance with consent and safeguarding requirements.
  • Provide regular information on upcoming activities that can be promoted through AFH communication channels.
  • Help demonstrate how community participation and volunteering contribute to humanitarian action and sustainable recovery.

10.    Planning, Monitoring and Reporting

  • Collect participant and partner feedback.
  • Produce concise monthly updates for management.

Personal Competencies

We are particularly interested in candidates who are:

  • Energetic: Willing to spend significant time working directly with communities, volunteers, and partners.

  • Solution-oriented: Able to respond calmly and practically when plans change.
  • A strong communicator: Comfortable representing AFH with communities, partners, volunteers, and public audiences.

What Makes This Role Different?

This is not a conventional desk-based coordination position.
We are looking for someone who enjoys being in the community, meeting people, developing relationships, bringing partners together, mobilizing volunteers, and turning ideas into action.
One week may involve coordinating a children's activity with local volunteers; another may involve organizing a youth entrepreneurship event with a university; another could involve bringing businesses and community organizations together for a fundraising campaign or mobilizing volunteers around a health, nutrition, or community initiative.
The successful candidate will therefore have considerable opportunity to create, innovate, build partnerships, and develop new initiatives under the Action For Humanity umbrella.

Success in the Role

During the first year, success would be demonstrated through:

  • Establishment of an active and diverse AFH community volunteer network.
  • Regular implementation of high-quality community and youth initiatives.
  • Increased engagement of young people and children in appropriate AFH activities.
  • Development of new partnerships with universities, schools, businesses, civil society organizations, and community groups.
  • Successful delivery of public and community events.
  • Development of creative community fundraising and engagement activities.
  • Strong documentation of participation, results, and community impact.
  • Evidence that community ideas and volunteer participation are contributing to AFH's wider humanitarian and development mission.
