DRC has been operating in the Middle East (ME) region for over a decade, running a combination of emergency, livelihood, protection and advocacy programmes through Country Offices (COs) in Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey with a Regional Office (RO) in Amman.

Overall purpose of the role

DRC Yemen is seeking an experienced WASH Assistant to ensure that water, sanitation, and hygiene activities are implementing effectively, professionally, and in accordance with the culture and practices of the local population. It is a key DRC position, with DRC expecting that the post holder with be qualified and possess WASH skills, knowledge, and attitude to be immediately effective in the field. These include the active involvement and the full participation by all authorities and community leaders/members. The WASH Assistant will report to the WASH Manager in the North Area Office. 

Geographic scope: Country (Yemen)                            

This position is based in Sa’ada, with frequent travel to field/targeted.

Main Responsibilities:

1.    With the WASH Officer, work with local government institutions, non-governmental organizations, community-based organizations, and local communities in order to ensure the smooth execution of water & sanitation infrastructure and Hygiene promotion activities and supervision on contractors and hygiene promotion volunteers.
2.    Participate in WASH baseline, end-line, technical assessments, data collection, verification of beneficiaries’ lists, distribution of HKs, clean-up campaigns, awareness sessions …etc
3.    Contribute to supervision of WASH construction and rehabilitation works and ensure in close coordination with the WASH Officer and prepare for hand overs events / documents.
4.    Facilitate water testing activities to ensure water quality improvements and sustainability all the time.
5.    Facilitate and follow-up the water treatment at all levels and at water sources in particular.  
6.    Liaise with Community Water Management Committees (CWMCs) in areas where WASH infrastructure is being rehabilitated to ensure local ownership and assist in developing sustainable mechanisms for operations and maintenance.
7.    Mobilization of local communities to support diarrhoea and other water-borne diseases interventions at household and community levels, and to provide the required efforts that can help on prevention and control of such diseases and ensure problem-solving are in place. 
8.    Adapt hygiene promotion package for communities, with a range of topics including handwashing, water safety, water storage, water treatment, appropriate sanitation, hygiene, and good practices.
9.    Maintain links with Community Health Volunteers (CHVs), daily follow-up and provide technical support to ensure high quality implementation of hygiene promotion activities.
10.    Contribute to preparing of regular reports (daily, weekly, and monthly) and progress updates, as well as the weekly movement plan, and weekly action plan.
11.    In close coordination WASH Manager and WASH officer, ensure the integration of gender, protection, social inclusion, environment, and other cross-cutting issues to the design, implementation, and development of WASH activities and ensure that activities consider the needs of specific groups and individuals, especially children, the elderly, and PWD.
12.    Accomplish the other necessary activities related to the office , program and tasks assigned by the supervisor.

Essential qualities and experiences: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant area.
  • Has experience in WASH and hygiene promotion in particular.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural context as a flexible and respectful team player. 
  • Understanding of gender, protection and human rights. 
  • Strong networking, interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Previous works in INGOs is preferably. 
  • Self-motivated and able to work with a minimum of guidance.
  • Good report writing skills
  • Female candidates from the residents of the targeted district are preferably.

Languages: (indicate fluency level)

  • Good English spoken & written skills.
  • Fluency in Arabic language (written and spoken)

We offer

Contract length: DRC will offer the successful applicant a contract till 31st August 2025, renewable dependent on both funding and performance.

Work place: Sa’ada with frequent travel to field field.

Salary and conditions will be in accordance with Danish Refugee Council’s Terms of Employment for National. This position will be placed at level (NMI).
