  1. Background

The Humanitarian Development Program (HDP) is a nonprofit and independent NGO in Yemen. It focuses on improving the quality of Yemeni people’s life through well-planned and comprehensive projects in WASH, education, Food security & livelihood Shelter, CCCM, Protection, health and related activities that strengthen underserved communities in all parts of Yemen with the flexibility to respond rapidly to emergencies.

Vulnerable adults and children are particularly at risk of sexual exploitation and abuse. HDP defines the program’s commitment to the protection from sexual exploitation and abuse (PSEA) of vulnerable adults, involving HDP Employees and Related Personnel. In recognition of the special vulnerability of children, also HDP affirms commitment to the welfare and protection from sexual exploitation and all forms of abuse of children, involving HDP employees and related personnel.

The YEHCY "Youth Employment through Heritage and Culture in Yemen" project primarily focuses on urban rehabilitation and cultural programming, addressing urgent humanitarian needs while restoring social cohesion and promoting local ownership of endangered cultural heritage.

The project combines available technical resources, trained youth workers, and modern heritage rehabilitation methodologies used by UNESCO "Cash for Work: Enhancing Livelihood Opportunities for Urban Youth in Yemen". Participatory cash-for-work programs in heritage restoration will provide sustainable income opportunities for young beneficiaries, while the cultural incubation program focuses on gender mainstreaming and capacity building.

  1. Job Purpose:

The GIS Expert will lead the mapping, documentation, and spatial analysis of cultural heritage assets in Al-Mukha and Taiz under the YECHY project. This role is essential for developing a comprehensive, georeferenced heritage inventory and supporting conservation planning, site monitoring, and heritage-sensitive urban development. The GIS Expert will collaborate closely with heritage professionals, engineers, and community teams to produce accurate, accessible, and actionable geospatial data that informs preservation and development strategies.

  1. Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the direct supervision of the Project Manager and in close collaboration with the Archaeologist, Conservation Expert, and Consultant, the GIS Expert will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Develop and manage a GIS-based platform to map, document, and archive heritage assets in project locations, with a focus on Al-Mukha.

  • Develop and manage a GIS-based platform in Al-Mukha to map, document, and archive heritage assets in project locations in Al-Mukha

  • When required, carry out fieldwork to collect spatial data using GPS, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and surveying equipment, and ensure that four forms are completed and uploaded in the Geographic Information System (GIS) program.

  • Digitize site maps and integrate historical, architectural, and archaeological documentation into the GIS system.

  • Design and maintain spatial databases containing attribute data on the condition, typology, and cultural significance of heritage assets.

  • Prepare maps using the Geographic Information System (GIS) program for the inventory of historical buildings, based on the data received from the field survey team.

  • Support coordination with UNESCO, local authorities, and stakeholders to validate data and support collaborative information sharing

  • Train youth and local staff in fundamental GIS and mapping techniques as part of the project’s capacity-building efforts.

  • Ensure data quality, accurate metadata documentation, and adherence to heritage conservation standards.

  • Contribute to the final presentation, packaging, and handover of the comprehensive digital heritage inventory.

  • Any other tasks assigned by the line manager.

  1. Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in GIS, Geography, Geomatics, Urban Planning, Archaeology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in GIS and spatial data management, preferably in cultural heritage or urban development settings.
  • Proficiency in GIS software (such as ArcGIS, QGIS), GPS data collection, and geospatial mapping workflows.
  • Experience working in fragile contexts or heritage-focused projects is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with Yemeni heritage and historical urban landscapes is highly desirable.
  • Strong skills in spatial database management, data visualization, and technical report writing.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team and engage with local communities.
  • Fluency in Arabic is required; working knowledge of English is preferred.
