Job Title : Lawyer                                                                                                                                      

Reporting to :  Legal Coordinator                                                                                                                                 

Location: 3 Aden (Basateen), 1 Lahj (Kharaz),  2Hadramout (Mukalla/Sayoun)

Job Purpose                                                                                                                                                   

The Lawyer will provide direct legal assistance, counselling, representation, and legal awareness to refugees, asylum seekers, and persons in need of international protection. The position contributes directly to improving access to justice, legal documentation, and protection for vulnerable populations, including individuals in immigration detention.  

Key Responsibilities                                                                                                                                      

  • Provide individual legal counselling to refugees and asylum seekers on:
  • Civil documentation                                                                                                       
  • Family law                                                                                                                       
  • Housing, Land and Property (HLP) issues                                                                       
  • Labor and administrative disputes                                                                                 
  • Represent refugees and asylum seekers at police stations, courts, and before relevant authorities.
  • Support mediation and peaceful resolution of disputes within communities.
  • Maintain accurate legal case files and follow-up actions in line with SOPs.
  • Conduct regular visits to immigration detention facilities.                   
  • Identify individuals in need of international protection.                                 
  • Provide legal advice and information on asylum procedures and rights.
  • Support referrals and follow-up with UNHCR and relevant authorities.
  • Conduct group legal awareness sessions for refugees, asylum seekers, and host communities.
  • Deliver sessions on rights, obligations, civil registration, Yemeni legal procedures, and access to justice.
  • Support Community Outreach Volunteers (COVs) with accurate legal information and messaging.
  • Support refugees and asylum seekers in understanding registration procedures and documentation requirements.
  • Provide legal guidance related to birth registration, marriage certificates, residency permits, and ID documentation.
  • Coordinate with IPNA registration centers and UNHCR as needed.       
  • Coordinate closely with the Legal Coordinator, protection teams, and partners.
  • Contribute to legal trend analysis and protection reporting.              
  • Ensure adherence to confidentiality, data protection, and ethical legal practice standards.

Required Qualifications and Experience                                                                                                     

Education                                                                                                                                                       

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law (licensed to practice in Yemen preferred)

Experience                                                                                                                                                      

  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience providing legal assistance or representation
  • Experience working with refugees, migrants, or vulnerable populations preferred
  • Familiarity with Yemeni legal system and procedures                                
  • Experience in humanitarian or protection settings is an asset                                     

Skills                                                                                                                                                               

  • Strong legal drafting, counselling, and advocacy skills                                                               
  • Ability to communicate complex legal concepts in accessible ways                              
  • Strong interpersonal and cultural sensitivity skills                                                      

Languages 

  • English is an asset
