The MEAL Assistant supports NRC’s monitoring, evaluation, accountability, and learning functions by ensuring accurate data collection, entry, and documentation across projects. Working with program teams at both Area and Country Office levels, the role helps verify achievements against targets, maintain systematic records, and capture lessons learned. Positioned within NRC’s established MEAL framework, the MEAL Assistant strengthens program quality, accountability, and evidence‑based decision‑making.

Responsibilities

The MEAL Assistant supports the field-level implementation of MEAL activities, focusing on data collection, entry, and basic analysis for assessments and outcome monitoring.

The role ensures that monitoring information is collected in a safe, inclusive, and ethical manner, contributes to proper data management and documentation, and supports MEAL Officers and Coordinators in ensuring that evidence informs accountability, reporting, and programme learning.

Generic Responsibilities

1.    Conduct quantitative and qualitative data collection (surveys, Focus Group Discussion - FGDs, KIIs, PDMs, PIMs, classroom observations, outcome surveys).
2.    Ensure accurate and timely entry of monitoring and assessment data into NRC databases.
3.    Assist with data cleaning, coding, and preparation for analysis.
4.    Support the maintenance of MEAL databases and proper filing/documentation (hard and soft copies).
5.    Assist in verifying project activities, distributions, and beneficiary lists.
6.    Collaborate with partner/community-based enumerators during data collection.
7.    Ensure safe, inclusive, and ethical engagement with communities during data collection.
8.    Compliance and adherence to NRC policies, guidance and procedures, and a specific responsibility for the MEAL policies and procedures

Specific Responsibilities

  • Thoroughly review all targets and achievement figures for ongoing and completed projects, comparing them with the uploaded MoVs to ensure accuracy and consistency.
  • Maintain regular communication with the program teams at both the AO and CO levels, providing constructive feedback on reported progress in the projects’ logframes and corresponding supporting documents.
  • Implement measures to ensure the systematic archiving and secure storage of supporting documents and related documentation, facilitating easy future retrieval and reference.
  • Provide support in the preparation of project monitoring and outcome reports, including baselines, PDMs, endlines, etc., and review reports submitted by the program team.
  • Review targets and actual achievements reported for all donor reporting to ensure accuracy and alignment with project documentation.
  • Present project progress, comparing achievements against targets, and highlight any misalignments with reported figures or supporting documents during PCM events.
  • Support the development of MEL data collection tools for regular surveys and offer technical assistance for monitoring and evaluation activities, including drafting data collection methodologies and analysis frameworks.
  • Communicate regularly with program teams to capture and share learning emerging from project implementation.
  • Develop tools and processes to document lessons learned, working closely with program teams to ensure relevance and usability.
  • Present lessons learned and key insights during PCM events, and ensure that learning materials are systematically archived and easily retrievable for program staff
  • Carry out any other tasks relevant to the function or position as delegated by the line manager.

Qualifications

Critical Interfaces

CO and AO MEAL staff: for direct technical collaboration and coordination on implementation.

Programme field staff:  coordination for assessments, outcome monitoring, reporting…

Generic Professional Competencies

  • Two to three years of relevant experience in Monitoring & Evaluation field in a humanitarian/recovery context.
  • Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis
  • Advanced data collection and analytical skills, including the ability to design and implement data management systems, analyze large datasets, and generate actionable insights.
  • Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, statistics, or related field preferred
  • Strong English communication skills, including the ability to write clear reports and engage in professional discussions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoftt Office applications, e.g. Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.
