Context/Reporting line:
Under the overall supervision of the Protection Officer and direct supervision of the Senior Protection Assistant in Aden, and in collaboration with other relevant units, the Protection Assistant will be responsible to support protection activities in Hays, including awareness raising sessions, protection monitoring and case management for persons who have experienced or at the heightened risk of being exposed to human rights violation including women, girls and persons with disability. The case management primarily targets internally displaced persons and members of host communities. The modality of case management can be static and mobile/remote and shall be provided in different IOM operational sites including camps, informal settlements, community response point.
Core Functions / Responsibilities
1. Conduct protection monitoring: collect high quality information through direct observation, focus group and community discussions, and key informant interviews in accordance with IOM’s guidelines and SOPs.
2. Support the identification and analysis of protection issues and trends.
3. Identify and respond appropriately to beneficiaries with protection needs including through referrals, case management, and in-kind assistance.
4. Maintain and update electronic databases and records for each client and keep detailed notes of all casework activities.
5. Maintain accurate and confidential case files, and prepare regular reports on activities, challenges, and outcomes to inform program development and donor reporting.
6. Conduct and facilitate regular awareness raising activities as required.
7. Support the development of referral service mapping. Collect information on access to services and provide regular updates on changes to services available.
8. Participate at relevant meetings in West Coast/ Hays as delegated and assist to strengthen partnership with governmental and non-governmental actors of protection.
9. Complete all protection training assigned by the Senior Protection Assistant, Protection Officer, or Protection Coordinator.
10. Assist in emergency protection responses, including rapid assessments and immediate support to affected populations during crises.
11. Undertake any other duties as may be assigned
Required Qualifications
Education:
- High School diploma with four years of relevant experience, or University Degree (B.S.c) in Social Science, Law, Business Administration or other relevant discipline with two years of relevant experience
Experience and Skills:
- Understanding of GBV, Child Protection, Counter Trafficking and TiP and General Protection Case Management Procedures and Processes.
- Experience in providing direct assistance to beneficiaries.
- Experience working within challenging environments.
- Experience in organizing events, workshops, and meetings.
- Experience with raising awareness in the public domain.
- Experience working with governmental, non-governmental institutions and UN agencies preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality, respect, non-discrimination and safety of clients at all times.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, effective in representation and liaison with external parties (required).
- Ability to organize work, work independently and prioritize work under pressure, coordinate multiple tasks and maintain attention to detail (required).
- Good interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
- Flexibility in working overtime when needed.
- Computer literacy (Microsoft Word and Excel).
- Willing to collaborate with and support people from different ethnic groups and different religions.
- Demonstrated interest in humanitarian work and supporting people affected by conflict.
Languages:
- For this position, fluency in Arabic, and English is required (oral and written).
