Overview:

The European Union Delegation to Yemen is focused on enhancing the visibility and understanding of its partnership with Yemen, targeting key groups such as women, youth, civil society, and local authorities. This initiative aims to create high-impact strategic communication content that showcases the EU’s contributions to Yemen’s resilience, addressing basic needs, and fostering growth. Yemen Aid, the implementation partner, is now seeking a skilled Research Consultant to support a project aimed at mapping and analyzing the EU-Yemen partnership, identifying communication channels, and helping produce data-driven content.

  • Position: Field Researcher 
  • Location: Aden, Yemen 
  • Contract Duration: 6 months with the potential for renewal
  • Application Deadline: February 1, 2025 

The role will involve data gathering, analysis, and stakeholder engagement to ensure that the European Union’s partnership with Yemen is effectively communicated to local and international audiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct data gathering, research, and analysis to identify core elements of the EU’s projects in Yemen, communication strategies, media consumption patterns, and cultural/political sensitivities.
  • Map and verify key stakeholders, including opinion leaders, media players, and potential influencers. 
  • Conduct focus groups, individual interviews and surveys to gauge public opinion and awareness, partner communication mechanisms, ensuring outputs align with local linguistic and cultural contexts. 
  • Provide substantial input to development of work plans, research questions and field research guides.
  • Collaborate with local communities to gather authentic stories and insights to produce high-quality, people-focused content (e.g., human interest stories, infographics, and videos).
  • Monitor the political and security situation to adapt research methodologies as needed. 
  • Assist team lead, research consultant lead and other team members when needed.
  • Provide bi-weekly reports, including progress, challenges, and feedback on activities conducted.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in communications, Social Sciences, Political Science, or a related field.

Experience:

  • At least 3 years of field research experience in Yemen.
  • Proven track record in data collection, stakeholder mapping, and campaign support.
  • Familiarity with communication campaigns, development programs, and working with international organizations.

Skills:

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in multicultural environments.
  • High proficiency in Arabic (native) for interviews and English (C2 level) for all deliverables.
  • Knowledge of research tools and software is a plus.
  • Competency in social media content creation and multimedia tools is a plus.

Other Requirements:

  • Knowledge of Yemen’s socio-political landscape.
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to challenging and unpredictable conditions.
  • Awareness of and respect for cultural sensitivities and gender equity.

Conditions

  • The role may involve travel within South Yemen, where feasible and safe.
