Akkon University of Applied Human Sciences (www.akkon-hochschule.de) in Berlin is the first university in the country founded under the auspices of a humanitarian organization. As a state- recognized institution of the Johanniter Unfall-Hilfe e.V. (JUH) it offers interdisciplinary study programs in Nursing and Medicine, Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid, as well as Pedagogy and Social Work.
The Institute for Research in International Assistance (IRIA) at Akkon University has a long-standing track record in practice-oriented and scientifically grounded projects in the fields of global health, health systems strengthening, humanitarian assistance, and development cooperation.

In close cooperation with the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ), IRIA contributes to improving healthcare and Mental Health and Psychological Support (MHPSS) for vulnerable populations in Yemen.

For the GIZ-funded project "Rebuilding Resilience in Yemen" we are seeking a

Project Coordinator

for Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Activities Location: Lahj and Al Mukalla, Yemen

(NGO or Free-lancer, project duration: September 1st, 2025 – November 14th, 2026) who is capable of supporting the following core activities in Yemen:

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate and support the implementation of project activities in Lahj and Al Mukalla in cooperation with external service providers and the Akkon/IRIA team
• Assist implementing partners in obtaining necessary approvals from the Ministry of Public Health and Population
• Facilitate cooperation with governmental and non-governmental actors, local authorities, and community leaders
• Conduct regular service mapping in project areas and ensure effective referral pathways
• Organize and support workshops, training sessions, awareness campaigns, anti-stigma activities, community based psychological services, and podcast production
• Provide monthly narrative and monitoring reports on progress, challenges, referral data, and key outcomes
• Monitor political and security developments in the project regions and report on new risks implications for project activities
• Ensures accurate and timely processing of invoices, reimbursements, and other financial transactions and reports in Yemen
• Offer technical support to case managers and PSS staff to enhance service linkages for clients
• Uphold and promote gender-sensitive, inclusive approaches and advocate for vulnerable groups
• Regularly travel to project locations and coordinate field visits for Akkon/IRIA staff

Your profile

• University degree in public health, social sciences, psychology, administration or related field
• Prior experience in international cooperation or humanitarian aid is required
• At least 3 years of experience in MHPSS or protection programming, with demonstrated experience in coordination or case management in humanitarian contexts
• Familiarity with mental health or psychosocial support (MHPSS) topics and vulnerable groups
• Strong knowledge of the local context in Lahj and Al Mukalla and familiarity with the existing health and protection services
• Excellent interpersonal, negotiation and communication skills
• Ability to work collaboratively with government actors, NGOs, and communities
• Excellent reporting and documentation skills
• High level of accuracy, reliability, and attention to detail in financial matters
• Ability to travel regularly between Lahj and Al Mukalla as required by the project
• Commitment to humanitarian principles, confidentiality, and the safeguarding of vulnerable populations
• High proficiency in English and Arabic (spoken and written)
