Action Contre la Faim is an International Humanitarian Organization established in 1979 with the mission to save lives by combating hunger through prevention, detection and treatment of malnutrition, in particular during and after emergency situations caused by conflict and natural disasters. Action Contre la Faim provides coordinated responses in nearly 50 countries including Yemen globally within 7 field of expertise which includes Nutrition and Health, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Food Security, Mental Health Care Practices, Gender and Protection, Advocacy, Risk and Disaster Management and Research.
ACF has been operational in Yemen since 2012 and is operational in 4 bases (Aden, Hodeida, Al khokha and Sanaa). The mission implements its activities which are centred on 3 sectors, Nutrition and Health, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Mental Health and Psychosocial Support and Protection (MHPSS-P).

  • Job Title:  Psychologist 
  • Location:  Abyan
  • Contract duration: Till 31 December 2026 with possibility for renewal 
  • Basic monthly salary (taxable): 1041$ to 1243$ based on experience salary calculation (excluding other benefits offered by the organization)
  • Direct Line Manager: MHPSS&P Program Manager
  • Functional: MHPSS&P Program Manager 

Position Summary

To provide psychological and protection services to vulnerable people and capacity building to non-specialists at primary health care and community levels.

Objective 1: Provide quality MHPSS services to individuals targeted by the MHPSS program

  • Plan and implement MHPSS interventions, including integrated multisectoral activities
  • Contribute to MHPSS needs and resources assessments, gender and protection risk assessments, actor and service mapping, and other contextual analyses
  • Conduct psychological assessments
  • Ensure a safe, appropriate, and confidential environment for psychological interventions regardless of deployment location
  • Ensure proper use of psychometric scales
  • Organize individual and group therapeutic sessions for people with mental health issues (children, adolescents and adults)
  • Strictly follow ACF-recommended psychological intervention protocols
  • Contribute to the design of sectoral guidelines, protocols, SOPs, and methodologies for context-adapted psychological interventions
  • Maintain confidentiality of beneficiary files
  • Refer to specialized services (mental health, health, protection, etc.) when necessary, in line with ACF protocols, international standards, and national norms
  • Provide remote psychological support if field access is impossible

Objective 2: Contribute to capacity building of non-specialized MHPSS actors, community actors, and ACF psychosocial workers

  • Prepare and deliver MHPSS training for general practitioners, nurses, midwives, health agents, social workers in primary health care centers and hospitals, nutrition centers, following ACF protocols and international guidelines (e.g., mhGAP, PM+, IPT, Thinking Healthy, child development, basic helping skills, life skills, social and emotional skills, etc.)
  • Assist ACF social and psychosocial workers in preparing and conducting training and technical supervision for community organizations and stakeholders (conduct training in their absence)
  • Contribute to training and supervision of ACF social and psychosocial workers and other ACF teams (especially on psychological first aid, psychosocial issues, and referral)

Objective 3: Support MHPSS program implementation

  • Continuously assess MHPSS-related needs and gaps, report challenges, suggest improvements, and propose new interventions
  • Contribute to data collection, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis, following ACF tools and processes
  • Ensure confidentiality of beneficiary information and data collection at all times
  • Understand and follow logistical, financial, HR, and security procedures for project implementation
  • Actively collaborate with other country office departments
  • Promote and contribute to MHPSS technical development
  • Represent ACF in field meetings with implementing partners, INGOs, NGOs, cluster coordination, and MHPSS working groups, as requested by the program manager or MHPSS department head
  • Ensure compliance with ACF gender requirements; commit to and uphold ACF principles on gender, age, and diversity; support implementation and promotion of these principles throughout activities

Objective 4: Participate in MHPSS research projects

  • Participate in data collection, entry, and analysis
  • Draft a monthly activity report for the line manager
  • Collaborate on activity reporting Attend team meetings

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED FOR THE POSITION

Education and experience:

  • Psychology degree allowing practice as a psychologist (usually Master’s level)
  • At least one year of professional experience as a psychologist, preferably in a humanitarian context
  • Experience in MHPSS in humanitarian settings with vulnerable populations
  • Experience in training and supervision

Technical skills:

  • Conduct psychological assessments
  • Design and implement psychological and psychosocial interventions
  • Design and deliver supervision and training
  • Manage SMSP information and reporting
