Action Contre la Faim is an International Humanitarian Organization established in 1979 with the mission to save lives by combating hunger through prevention, detection and treatment of malnutrition, in particular during and after emergency situations caused by conflict and natural disasters. Action Contre la Faim provides coordinated responses in nearly 50 countries including Yemen globally within 7 field of expertise which includes Nutrition and Health, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Food Security, Mental Health Care Practices, Gender and Protection, Advocacy, Risk and Disaster Management and Research.
ACF has been operational in Yemen since 2012 and is operational in 4 bases (Aden, Hodeida, Al khokha and Sanaa). The mission implements its activities which are centred on 3 sectors, Nutrition and Health, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Mental Health and Psychosocial Support and Protection (MHPSS-P).

Job Title:  Senior Environmental Officer
Location:  Aden
Contract duration: until 31st December 2026 with possibility of extension.
Basic monthly salary (taxable): 1227 $ to 1468 $ based on experience salary calculation (excluding other benefits offered by the organization)
Line manager: Logistic Head of Department
Functional manager: Sustainable Supply chain coordinator

Objective of the position : Pilot/test the environmental actions of the logistics action plan at the mission level (phase 1) in view of phase 2 (implementation and monitoring)

Mission 1: Infrastructure waste management (Office and GH) (40%)

  • According to the identification of our volumes and categories of waste by office and GH,  map the recycling channels present in the areas of intervention, during site visits;
  • Carry out assessments during visits;
  • Identify the hazardous waste management channels;
  • Development of the collection process in the capital and bases and bases-capital, towards the recycling channels;
  • Initiate contracts with the recycling and waste management sectors, and framework recycling contracts;
  • Collect/capitalize program expectations on waste (written report to be relayed on coordination and headquarters).

In view of phase 2

  • Monitor contractualization between ACF missions and these sectors
  • correct solid waste management of the infrastructures
  • Possibly set up waste transfer processes to appropriate structures at the national level (reverse log) relating to waste log and programs
  • Support for the potential launch of a pilot project

Mission 2: Support the implementation of sustainable procurement and test the logistics tools (40%)

  • In close collaboration with the country office Procurement focal point, having analyzed strategic markets, contextualized Environmental, Social and Good Governance (ESG) risks in the risk matrix;
  • Test the sustainable criteria and therefore the supplier's ability to meet them;
  • Identify supply chains for second-hand equipment, ensure the reliability of these supplies;
  • Identify the types / composition of packaging , and supplier;
  • List quality & environmental standards and labels at country level (according to strategic markets).

In view of phase 2

  • Capitalize on the relevant criteria
  • Support monitor supplier roadmaps
  • Support for the implementation of internal/external initiatives (e.g. replacement of more sustainable packaging, etc.), quality test monitoring

Mission 3: Reporting & Accountability (20%)

  • Collect data and indicator tracking table (KPIs);
  • Ensure internal communication on the results obtained at the level of the mission and headquarters;
  • Capitalization report.

In view of phase 2

  • Monitoring log monitoring tools and indicator monitoring table (KPIs)

Continuous capitalization and support to the bases in the implementation of processes

Ensure adherence to ACF gender requirement; Commit and comply with ACF gender, age and diversity principles at anytime during activities; Support the implementation and the promotion of gender. 

Additional Responsibilities

  • This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive and the employee will also perform other related tasks as required and be responsible for reporting and communicating the progress and achievement of the specific assigned task;

Required Qualification, Skills and Professional Experience 

  • Minimum Requirement: of 3 years studies in on of this area BSc in Environmental Science, waste management or Supply Chain Management / Logistics 
  • Minimum of 2 years’ extensive experience in Environmental or waste management project or supply chain / logistics , preferably in Humanitarian or development work;
  • Working knowledge of the environmental protection laws and waste management regulations applicable, including relevant local authorities’ requirements.
  • Excellent attention to detail, highly organized, rigorous, self-motivated, strong sense of responsibility, ability to work independently.
  • Expert User of Microsoft Office Suite 2016 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Ability to manage and follow work plans.
  • Strong verbal, written and communication skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work effectively in diverse, cross-cultural teams in a complex, multi-site work environment.
  • Fluent in English.
  • Good interpersonal skills – approachable, diplomatic, able to negotiate, influence, give and receive effective feedback, be a team player.
