BCHR is a non-profit and non-governmental organization aiming to provide health, nutrition, food security and protection services as a humanitarian response to the escalating socio-economic situation in Yemen since 2015.BCHR aims to ensure the quality and safety of food provided to children and families in the targeted communities.
Job Summary:
The Quality Control Officer will oversee the quality assurance processes for food preparation and distribution.
1. Background
The School Feeding Project aims to provide nutritious meals to students in Hadhramout Tarim], improving their health, learning abilities, and school attendance. A key component of the project's success is ensuring the quality, safety, and nutritional value of the food provided. The Quality Control Officer will play a critical role in overseeing and guaranteeing these standards are met throughout the entire food supply chain.
2. Position Summary
The Quality Control Officer will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring quality control protocols for the School Feeding Project. This includes supervising food procurement, preparation, storage, and distribution to ensure compliance with national food safety standards, project guidelines, and nutritional requirements.
3. Reporting and Supervision
The Quality Control Officer will report directly to the Project Manager. They will work closely with other project staff, including logistics supervisors, nutritionists, and school-level coordinators.
4. Key Responsibilities
A. Quality Assurance and Standards
- Develop and update a comprehensive Quality Control Manual for the project, covering all stages from sourcing to serving.
- Ensure all food items procured meet specified quality, safety, and nutritional standards.
- Establish and maintain a system for tracking food quality issues and implementing corrective actions.
- Conduct regular audits of project kitchens, storage facilities, and distribution points to ensure adherence to hygiene and safety protocols.
B. Monitoring and Inspection
- Perform unannounced inspections of food suppliers and catering partners to verify compliance with contractual agreements.
- Monitor food preparation processes, including cooking temperatures, handling, and portion sizes, to ensure consistency and quality.
- Inspect delivered meals at schools to check for freshness, temperature, packaging, and overall presentation.
- Collect and analyze samples of food for laboratory testing as required, to verify nutritional content and absence of contaminants.
C. Training and Capacity Building
- Develop and deliver training sessions for project staff, school coordinators, and kitchen personnel on food safety, hygiene, and quality control procedures.
- Provide guidance and support to partners and suppliers on best practices for food handling and storage.
D. Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of all quality control inspections, audits, and test results.
- Generate regular reports on the quality status of the school feeding program, highlighting key findings, challenges, and recommendations.
- Document any incidents of food-related illness or complaints and lead the investigation process.
E. Stakeholder Collaboration
- Liaise with relevant government bodies, such as the to ensure the project's compliance with national regulations.
- Collaborate with nutritionists to ensure that meals are meeting the required nutritional standards and dietary guidelines.
5. Required Qualifications and Experience
A. Education
- A Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Nutrition, Public Health, Environmental Health, or a related field. A Master's degree is a plus.
B. Professional Experience
- Minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience in quality control, food safety, or a related role, preferably within a large-scale feeding or food-processing operation.
- Proven experience in developing and implementing quality management systems.
- Experience working with NGOs or in a humanitarian/development context is highly desirable.
C. Skills and Competencies
- Strong knowledge of national and international food safety standards (e.g., HACCP, ISO 22000).
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen eye for detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and reporting skills.
- Proficiency in relevant software, e.g., Microsoft Office Suite].
- Fluency in English, Arabic].
